Yes, I think it's covered in Hugh Fordin's book on the Freed Unit. I don't have the book at hand, but seems like the original ending had Garland and Kelly together (without the heroic sequence to rescue his reputation), and audiences wanted her to end up with Murphy. The newly filmed scenes made Kelly worthy of her, and in the finale Murphy was removed from the final number.
