Woofer needs to be 6.5" or smaller.

vintage, used, brand spanking new, whatever, I just want to know what is the best out there. maybe we can get a list and rank them later.

my vote is the advent baby II's - very smooth but not overwhelming at all

Totem Mani-2 Special Edition and the Merlin VSM would be the best I've had the opportunity to listen to. But I don't really audition monitors so my pool to draw from is pretty small.

    Here is my vote:

They are incredible stiff, the cabinet is one piece (there is no way to disassemble it). The sound is transparent and accurate. Their imaging and soundstage are top notch.

I vote for the classic Pinnacle PN6+ made 10 years ago and a very nice bookshelf speaker. You can't beat the price and performance.

I've heard that PSB Alphas are good, and NHT Super Zeroes too.
I have to follow this thread, cuz I'm debating moving from 6.1 (with a front center speaker in back) to 7.1 (with 2 book shelf speakers). [IMG] But my budget would be ~$250 street (or ~$400 list) for both.
I've also heard that Paradigm Titans are nice too.
www.ecoustics.com might be an interesting place to check reviews. And www.audioreview.com too.

If I wanted bookshelf sound I would look at DIY options such as the Scan-Speaker Revelator textile dome tweeter and 5 1/2" mid-range.

This way the bookshelf is destined for only one person...

And the best part with DIY speaker like the Revelator is you get to save since you're only spending about $1,000 worth of bare parts.

Geno, I'm not sure what you are getting at? Are you actually looking to buy a pair of "The best bookshelf speaker" or are you just taking a poll for curiosities sake? If you are looking at buying a pair, then it would be very helpful to know what preamp, poweramp, source you are using, not to mention the room dimensions.
However, if you have unlimited funds, then I would highly recommend the Wilson Benesch Discovery. Extremely high standard of construction using carbon fibre and with an integral stand. Four drivers (!) in such a compact cabinet (including isobaric bass drivers) gives it excellent bass extension and spl output for a bookshelf speaker. Excellent sound all round, from an innovative company (the first to implement curved cabinets). Details are:

    Discovery specs
Of course, you will need a cool $10,000 to be able to have the pleasure of owning them. [IMG]
    Cheers,
    Mike
