I wanted to say hello - I'm a new member, and thought these forums looked pretty informative. I also have a small delema

I recently had a water heater failure in my home, and I found out the hard way that my home theater was down hill from the water tank... I lost my subwoofer and my receiver to the damage...

Both components are a few years old, and now I'm "Debating" with the insurance complany as to the value for replacment of the units.

I'm asking members here if they could recomend a replacment to me, at least equal to what I lost to the water damage.

The subwoofer is a Cambridge Sound Works PSW1 - I've also heard people refer to this as a Henry Kloss sub. - I used this sub connected to a parametric eq to function more like a shaker than a sub, but I'm still looking to replace it with a real sub, of the same quality

The receiver is pretty straight forward - A SONY STR-DE845... I was thinking that the Harmon Kardon AVR146 would be comparable, but I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

For what it's worth, the remainder of the system is all Boston Acoustics Micro 80 sat's & powered sub.

Thanks in advance

People forget that your friendly water heater is under water pressure and what starts out as a small drip can end up with 40 gallons running water all over the place.

Also remember that your washing machine is also hooked up to your water supply with nothing much more than a rubber garden hose. If that hose breaks you will have running water all over the place.

It's not only what to buy but where to buy it. Also, factory refurbs can really make the dollar go farther. If your not adverse to buying on the internet then ac4l.com., onecall.com vanns.com and even amazon.com can give you a little more for your money.

But as for what to get, just about any name brand receiver will be more than comparable to the Sony. Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, Marantz, etc. all have something for you.

After they give you a check, tell us how much you have to spend and what else is in your rack and well help you spend it

I want to thank you for your quick responses -

"After they give you a check, tell us how much you have to spend and what else is in your rack and well help you spend it "

That's part of my problem - The insurance company wants to pay me for some nominal subwoofer, and I know that the one I have, or I should say HAD, is a very good one.... I mean, I don't have macintosh equipment, but the CSW PSW1 sub is a pretty nice unit, and now CSW is owned by Sound Blaster, and I'm iffy on their quality...

Did you have any suggestions as to a replacment, so that I could give my insurance company a price?

Thanks!

Something else you might want to consider to prevent water damage in the future:
Our TV and theater equipment is directly below the upstairs bathrooms. The first failure was a toilet valve that ruined the ceiling and flooded the TV. The second was a stem valve serving the shower that ruined the ceiling, flooded the TV, and took out the receiver. There's been numerous fixture and plumbing upgrades, but I also ripped the section of ceiling out and installed a sheet metal trough above the new sheet rock that will cause water to run over to the side of the room before coming down in the event of another failure. That space is the only place in the room that makes sense for my equipment.

So if your equipment happens to be right below a bathroom or other plumbing avenues on the floor above, consider my nightmare and rearrange your room!
