I have a Toshiba player and the subs are easily removed. Others have also reported being able to remove them with their players. Always ways around these things with a bit of effort.

I own a JVC region free player and I've tried EVERYTHING to remove the subs. to no avail so I usually watch my UK version, not 5.1 but decent 2.0 DS and same video transfer.
If anyone knows a workaround for the JVC's, can ya let me know..?

I would try eBay, if I were you. You can usually find people selling R2 discs there. Of course, you will need a multiregion player or else you will be wasting your time, but I'm sure you already knew that.
