since the release last year of the good bad ugly 2 disk special edition, i have been waiting for a fistfull and for a few dollars more to be released as 2 disk special editions----what happened with these releases? I seem to remember they were supposed to be released late last year. Does anyone know whats going on with these? I thought that tgtbatu was exellent (picture, sound and extras) i did kind of prefer the orginal cut though. and was a little dissapointed with the dubbing of eastwood and wallich's voices over the restored footage that was left out of the original cut. but overall the the 2 disk version was really good.

Since the home video division of MGM will now be handled by Fox instead of Sony, this may get back on the fast track sooner rather than later...or so I hope...

I broke down and bought the R2 version of For a Few Dollars More a couple of weeks ago. The contributions of Leone biographer Christopher Frayling, on the superb scene-specific commentary track and the documentary make it a must-have. If the R1 version uses someone else other than Frayling, I recommend getting the R2 version as well. You won't hear a commentary track full of such observations as "I thought that was neat" from Frayling. Amazon UK is selling it for only £6.97, which is a steal, IMO.

Frayling is also on A Fistful of Dollars, but I've never cared much for that one. He points out how For a Few Dollars More really possesses more classic "spaghetti" elements than Fistful.

Between the Bonds and the rest of the Leone Westerns, I think we would have heard by now if they were coming this year. Certainly by the 4th of July.
Would the FOX deal help or hinder them coming out-?
Who can say-sometimes the legal niceties and paperwork take weeks to settle before any moves are considered.

But as mentioned before-they could be holding these to help push Blu-Ray onto the public-this is SONY after all.

Well, in the case of Bond, definitely hinder.

If you have a region-free DVD player that does PAL-to-NTSC conversion, and you don't own the R2 special editions you're mad. They're excellent DVD, the PAL speed-up is some of the least noticeable I've seen, and the soundtrack is pitch-corrected, a rarity.

Anyway, I didn't buy a region-free player just for these discs, but if I did it would have been worth it.

Sorry, R1 missed the boat here and the R2 are better than good enough to hold me over to HD DVD or Blu-Ray.

Pal speedup is pal speedup. It's still 4% too fast, and that eliminates R2 dvds for me.

Not much point in owning a region-free player that does PAL-to-NTSC conversion then is there?

Anyway, I have no love for PAL speed-up, but I'm not going to let it keep me from watching movies I love either.

I would bet that Fox is still trying to get the Bond DVDs out in Region 1 at the same time Sony was - coinciding with the theatrical release of Casino Royale.

If Sony was far enough along in their production of the titles, it stands to reason that Fox wouldn't junk anything except warning cards and other such items on the discs that say "copyright Sony Pictures" on them.

    Brandon,

I bet your right. Bond would easily get the priority ahead of FoD and FaFDM based on how lucrative the franchise is. While it is a shame, I think if I were Fox and I had to choose between the two, I would do the same. I would target next Father's Day for a Leone boxset though. [IMG]

Ive also heard-true or not-that the German PARAMOUNT Editions are the ones to beat-ie: better than the excellent MGM UK set-I think because they did 4k transfers(?) which were done after the UK set. Thats all I THINK I know...
but I recall reading it somwhere-

odd, but it seems that as of today the German Trilogy is complete-but it is not clear who is putting it out, or if it got the same treatment...

    OOOPS.....
apparantly this is not the movie-here is a similar situation:

    and this [IMG]

I think it is some kind of Documentry-though using Babelfish you dont get a clue, so I dont think TGTB&TU is out in Germany yet...

Mark, Paramount's editions of A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More were prepared for them by TLE Films (see the link in my post above) and can be found in a four disc set here in an LE box here, or individually here and here.

MGM still retains the rights to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in Germany, and their 2-disc set is here; I believe it's identical to the R1, except that it doesn't include the original Italian mono track.

BTW, there's a similar thread to this, which may answer some questions, here: Sergio Leone Special Editions

It's worth noting here that the TLE German DVD of FAFDM has an extra dialogue scene reinstated, that is missing from the MGM SE [IMG]

I picked up FOD, FAFDM and FOD AKA Duck You Sucker from CD Wow and they were $7 each shipped to the US! I couldn't believe I got three two-disc releases shipped from Europe for $21 total.
