    Hi,
It seems that the September issue of SGHT features an article on the new Outlaw preamp. Here is what a guy who read it told me:
" The review of the Outlaw was not bad but it was not
all that glowing either. In fact, I thought it to be a little shallow. It did sum up
its worth by saying you get a lot for a litttle for whatever its worth. The main
article was comparing compact speakers and the Outlaw was used as the
amp/pre-amp source. I remember the article stating the Outlaw was a good
match for the book shelf speakers, but again, the review was not glowing. Its
a shame thought that SGHT use to be a referenced standard home theater
magazine, but now its not that good. I'm glad I cancelled my subsciption."

The review was of the Outlaw receiver that has been out for awhile (forgot the model number).

No, according to him it's the new preamp and not the 1050 receiver.

I could very well be wrong, since I only glanced through the article about budget Sat. speakers....but the one thing that stands out in my memory is the reviewer mentioning the recent price reduction of $100 to $499, which leads me to believe he is talking about the receiver....but I get several HT mags, so I could be thinking of another article I read this weekend. If so, my apologies.

I have the magazine in front of me. It is a side review of the 1050 Receiver that was used for reviewing the bookshelf speakers.

Thanks for clearing that up. Since I wasn't 100% positive, I thought it best not to rain on Razvan's post.

err, Razvan, I hate to disagree, but Ron's correct.
I've been exchanging emails with various folks from Outlaw Audio over the past few months about the Model 950 and as far as I knew the pre-production unit is still being worked on. So while I haven't seen this review (SGHT has been difficult to find locally), your post prompted me to call Peter from Outlaw Audio and ask him what's up. Here's the word directly from Peter of Outlaw Audio:
    • The SGHT article is a review of speakers.
    • The piece of Outlaw Audio equipment used to compare them was the Model 1050 Receiver.
    • No one other than the manufacturer and a few of the staff of Outlaw Audio have heard the pre-production Model 950.
    • SGHT's Editor Tom Norton made the decision to use the Model 1050 for the comparison after having personally used it for over two months.
    • The "mini-review" of the Model 1050 is just that, a small side-bar to the real article which is a comparison of speakers.
    • Outlaw Audio is very pleased with the review as published. (note: I, a customer of Outlaw, haven't see it, but Peter has and he, one of the founders of Outlaw, liked it [IMG] )
Now why is this a big deal to me? Because I want to beta test this dang thing and I was frustrated to think I might have missed my chance! [IMG]

    Razvan,
Please don't kill your source. You can rough them up a bit, but don't go killing them. [IMG]
Hey, mistakes happen. We're all human. You should see some of the mistakes I make ... actually, if you read this forum, you probably have! [IMG]
    Gregg,
I know, I just couldn't resist. Sorry. [IMG]

So what type of criteria do they look for when selecting a beta tester? The type of equipment they will be using the 950 with? [IMG]
I for one would like to see a variety of beta testers use the 950 with a wide slection of amps, speakers, etc. That way most of us can see what others have experienced and base buying (or not) decisions on some of these tests.
I'm sure there are plenty of good candidates on this board alone! [IMG]
