I don't know about everyone else but the first six months of 2002 for me has been really slow in terms of quality or big dvd releases. I have only bought 5 dvds so far this year (Atlantis:CE; Sixth Sense and Unbreakable Vista Series, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Iron Monkey). Geez, coincidentally all Disney releases.

The only other 'big release for the first half of the year is 'Harry Potter'and the extras on that seem to be of the 'powder puff' variety. To tell you the truth, it has been hard to maintain my interest in dvds during this slow time.

I guess I should be saving my money for the second half with all the big releases due to come out then. The list includes Simpsons (Season 2), Monsters Inc., LOTR (both versions), Beauty and the Beast, Pearl Harbor (VISTA series), Back to the Future Trilogy (hopefully), Raiders of the Lost Ark (hopefully), ET and the release of the summer blockbusters such as Spider-man and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.

    What does everyone think?

I hear ya Henry. I've only bought two DVDs this year.

There's 17 "confirmed" releases on my personal schedule to buy from here on out in 2002 (inlcuding planned purchases of some of this year's summer movies). That total, 19, would make 2002 the 2nd slowest year for me since the inception of the format. The slowest year for me was 1997, with a total of 18 DVD purchased (of course, there were only 9 months of DVD availability in 1997).

Overall, so far, thumbs down for 2002. 2000 was the high water mark in terms of DVD purchases, with 55 DVDs purchased in 2000. 1999 and 2001 were pretty big years as well.

Guys, I'm laughing my ass off!

We discussed this last year, and I complained (I think it was in September, but can't be sure), that I only had 5 for the rest of the year, and usually get 5 or 6 a month, on an average.

I don't keep records of what was brought when, but it has been about thirty so far this year, and I have 21 set up to buy before July 1st. Box sets count as 1 unit.

So, go figure. This is all a matter of taste, but if the 1st half of '02 is slow, I'm going to be broke by December.

    I bought 37 DVD's last year, with 16 being DVD's released in 2001.
So far, I've purchased 18 DVD's this year, with only AI being a 2002 release.
I am definately going to buy UHF, Dick Tracy, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, FOTR 2-disc, and 4-disc editions (I'm kind of disappointed that the 4-disc edition won't have the 2-disc set extras, nor will have DTS), Amelie, Amadeus: SE, BTTF trilogy, E.T., One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: SE, and maybe Beauty and the Beast.
I also will purchase the rumored DVD's of Around the World in Eighty Days, Blazing Saddles: SE, Spaceballs: The Ludicrous Edition, Sunrise, Walt Disney Treasures: Goofy and also Mickey Mouse in Black & White, Top Secret!, Ed Wood, El Cid, Pulp Fiction: SE, It's A Wonderful Life: SE, and of course, if Paramount and WB decide to finally release some of their silents (despite not a word of future DVD release [IMG] )
Plus, I am still saving $$$ for college in fall of '03. [IMG]

What are you guys talking about? This year has got to be the biggest year so far. I've bought nearly 40 titles, and it's not even close to the end of the year yet.

Just to mention of few, we had:

    Oz: The complete first season

Evil Dead: Book Of the dead edtion

    The Net: Special Edition

    Thirteen Ghosts

    Joy Ride

    Glass House

    Jeepers Creepers

    American Pie 2

Those are just an 1/10 of the ones I bought this year.

Hmmmm ... So far this year the Star Trek:The Next Generation - Season I box has been the major purchase.
I've also had to purchase Cinderella II for my daughter and Say Anything for my wife. She also wants next week's Fatal Attraction.
The rest of the year is going to be a killer.
Six more seasons of ST:TNG (I'll probably skip Season II).
Star Trek:The Wrath of Khan SE
Lord of the Rings (Both Editions)
    Back to the Future Trilogy
    Beauty and the Beast[IMG]latinum Collection
    Star Wars:Episode II
    Indiana Jones Trilogy(??)
And who knows what else might be announced in the next few months. It's quite possible, for example, that Spiderman and Ice Age could be released late this year as well.
The year may have started out slow; it will not end that way!!

    Slow?? Maybe for new releases...
Let's see, since January 1st I've bought 18 titles with 12 more already on order. This is a record pace for me. 5 of those already purchased have been new releases (6 if you count Moulin Rouge, released mid-December).
What've we got upcoming... Ocean's 11, Harry Potter (maybe, haven't made up my mind), LOTR (both), BTTF, AOTC... plus whatever catalog titles I continue to add.
Oh, this could get expensive. [IMG]

Slow? Not for me! My bank balance can't keep up with the new releases coming in every week. Of course, if you're talking recent Hollywood hoopla then yeah, I suppose it is slow but I'm more of a catalogue guy myself.
