Hardware is the physical equipment you can touch.

Software is the code (instructions) that controls the hardware. It's usually stored on something that's easily modified.

Firmware is software that's permanently stored in the hardware, usually in some form of readonly memory. It's not supposed to be easily modified.

It is however, intended to be modified, which is why it's not simply burned into a chip. Though as Selden said, they don't want you accidentally modifying it. Computer firmware updates are usually done from a boot disk. DVD players, from what I understand, are usually done from a specially-burned CD-ROM using some unlikely combination of remote control keypresses.
