Modern AVRs have too much firmware IMHO.
I have an Onkyo TX-SR393 (in fact a couple of them). On my downstairs system, the ARC stopped working a few months ago. I didn't have time to troubleshoot it so I just hooked up an optical cable. Then last week my center channel stopped working. I went through the manual and decided to try a firmware "reset".
With the unit powered on, you hold down the "CBL/SAT" button on the front panel then press the power button. The unit displays "CLEAR". You just wait for a few minutes until the CLEAR stops. In my case the unit turns itself off.
When I turned the unit back on, it went through the original "as factory delivered" set up sequence. Once I did that the ARC was working again and the center channel was again working.
Is this going to be the procedure going forward with HT AVRs? Does this work with other Onkyos and maybe even other brands?
