According to the press release it includes:

**NEW** Firefly Poster and Collectible Character Cards Inside Packaging as Gift With Purchase, for Limited Time Only

It'd be nice if the episodes were remastered, but I never managed to purchase the last release so this one, at a more reasonable price than is being charged for the OOP version, is welcome. :)

My original set was stolen so I'm probably buying this anyway, but I was curious.

Lord, if Fox had known how many times they'd end up releasing Firefly and the money machine it likely is for them, they probably wouldn't have cancelled the show and figured out a way to make it work on the network or an affiliate.

I'm still not happy a seven season outline was crammed in to a two hour movie(Serenity) to conclude the story. It gives all possibility of a continuation an anticlimactic roadblock.

I agree, but what were the options? Never finish the story in any way (in a televised form) or do the best you can with 2 hours. Fox clearly didn't know what to do and the project hadda go to Universal. If that doesn't say something, I don't know what does.

The same thing had to be done with Dollhouse, but at least they had a whole season to cram in 5 seasons worth of ideas. Ive withheld watching firefly. Was miffed that it took time away from Buffy and Angel only to be cancelled. Will probably get this release just to satisfy my Joss Whedon addiction.

My copy came in today.

The packaging is "nice" but impractical. The discs are in those crappy page affairs. In this case, a foldout version. The foldout feels "silky" and elegant but it slides into the case from the top. The top part of the case slides off to reveal a large slot in which are placed the disc holder, the cards, and the poster. As nice as it looks I'd rather have a standard BD case inside. Another case of studio disconnect. When will they learn? I'd have thought Fox would have gotten the message after all the complaints about the Lost in Space packaging.

I dug out a standard, 3 disc, Blu-ray case (a dual-sided page inside with 1 disc on the back). It fits nicely in the box in place of the foldout insert. It even looks like it'd be easy to cut down the foldout and use its "cover" and "back" artwork on the case where the normal artwork insert fits. I'd lose the photos inside but I don't know that I care. If nothing else, I could print a new cover for the standard case and put the foldout in storage "Just in case." The "poster" and art cards still fit in the new outer case along with the standard Blu-ray case. That's what Fox should have done and just put those photos on the foldout in a nice little booklet. That would have made a stellar package while providing proper storage for the discs.

Here are some photos of the set so you can see just what's up:

The inside of the disc "case" all folded out:

A closeup of the 2 left panels. You can see the cut-out slots where the discs are kept. There are only 3 discs so there's not a slot on the far left page.

The 2 right hand panels. Again, note the disc slots. Unless you wear gloves, the discs are impossible to remove without getting fingerprints on them.

The two outer flaps folded in. Left a bit open so you can see the disc slots.

The back and front of the "case." That's not damage on the bottom but glare from lights. The "case," like the outer box, has a silky/leathery feel and look. It's quite elegant and well done - but those paged disc slots kill it...

The entire back of the "case" with everything folded out.

The contents. The card photos still in their wrapping band laying on top of the folded "poster" (it's roughly the size of 2 of the "cases" opened up and laying bottom-to-top). The "case" is on the right with the box lid bottom center. You can see the slot where everything goes. It's a sturdy box. The "case" is a very tight side-to-side fit. If you remove it much expect it to show wear due to how tight it fits on the sides.

Finally, a shot of the cards, poster, and a standard Blu-ray case inside the outer box. That's a 3 disc case, having a double sided page with one disc on the back of the case. Plenty of room for an insert of photos inside the case. The Blu-ray case is 1/8" taller than the original "case" and poster. It's such a small amount that once the top is put on you can't see a difference.

So... the disc holder does have some nice photos inside, but they could easily have been put in a small booklet. After all, just how often do you really look at these things?

It's really a nicely done package, and well worth the ~$13 I paid (got it from Fox with a 30% off coupon and free shipping), but would have been a stellar one with a standard 3 disc case inside.

I'll be putting my original disc "case" in storage and using a standard 3 disc case inside.

Part of me wants to cut up that sleeve affair and use it for a cover and inserts but the anal me won't allow it...

I suspect it getting canceled was the best thing that could happen -- it's become a cult favorite instead of Heroes or the innumerable other
series that had to endure the fan revolts of anything beyond a great 1st season. Every "real" fan can start professing how poor the writing and how lazy those idiots in charge are for ruining it. Why did X do Y instead of what obviously should have happened based on event a and b? Either the episodes just become formulaic or they ruin it by doing something different. I noticed a long time ago that every fan is 10x the writer/editor/director than any of those hacks who get paid to do it.

Maybe it's because so many DVD transfers of recent movies snck but the Firefly DVDs rented from Netflix look superb. I wonder what was so special about these transfers? Do the Blu-rays look even better? I'm impressed.
