I'm not much of a photographer and black shiny things are hard to shoot but here's the finished product that I spent approx. 2 months of my spare time on. I'm working on a LCR for center duty but it isn't finished although it's assembled and currently in use.

My goals for this upgrade were to gain in overall sound quality (clarity, mids and smoothness). I was also interested in incorporating curves as an aesthetic desgin element.

These baby's sound great and keep sounding better the more I listen. Musically they have an incredible amount of bass (for their size.) I've been turning my sub off and just running them alone; they continue to bring a smile to my face... The highs are very smooth, female voices are reproduced with ease (no brightness what so ever). For HT duty they are very full and handle the mix of voice, sound and music without a strain. In short I love em'. -EJ

Very, very nice work! Your best yet, I'd say... and that's saying a lot!

I love the color choice and the curves really tie things together.

Great job Eric! They look great. How does the sound compare to the Adire 81's that you sold me? Not apples to apples I know. I'm sure that these have much more bottom end being ported, but I'd like your opinion on the differences.

Let me preface by saying I loved my 81's and they served me great for 4 years and I still think are one of the best bargain kits out there. (FYI - Prior to the 81's I had a pair of 281's which use 2 of the AV8 drivers and the same tweet (as the 81's) in a vented floorstander.)

For as good as the 81's are the 61's just do everything better. My only complaint against the 81's was I always thought the highs were a little harsh when pushed. The 61's eliminate it completely (of course your looking at a $20 tweeter compared to a $80). I never had much complaint with the mids I always thought that was one of the best parts of the AV8 that it could reproduce such good mids as an 8". The 61's are a gain in mid clarity though. That leaves the low end. The 61's do everything very well so I don't want to make it seem like they're just about the lowend but they really have a lot of it. The 81's don't even compare. A better comparison would be to the 281 towers and the 61's beat those too. Baby's got back.

Thanks to you all for your kind words. Half the fun of DIY is sharing it with your peers.

I used to be able to see these pictures but now they are not showing up. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Thanks

Thanks Eric,
They are so sweet looking! I love the curves on that design. If there was such a thing as "speaker porn," -they'd be the centerfold!:D

Those are certainly outstanding!!! I myself have done some radical designs. I think the beauty of DIY is the ability to allow your imagination to be created. I also build a lot of furniture for friends and family. The advantage of being retired early.

Awesome work Eric.

Just curious...is there any commercial speaker out there that'd you would say these are similar too?

I'm just trying to gauge the caliber of these kits.

Depends, are you talking commercial speakers of the same cabinet size? Then no. The low end of the 61 books is as good as most commercial towers I've heard. I say that though wanting to point out that they aren't just great in the low end. They sing through the whole range. It's hard to name a commercial product that the Exodus compare to but if I had to pick one I'd probably say they're as good if not better than the higher end Paradigm stuff.

I'm going to be building the RAW Acoustics HT3's using a new cabinet design I've been kicking around in my head for a few months. The HT3's also use the Extremis and CSS Mid but with a ribbon tweeter. Can't wait to compare the two. So stay tuned for those in the next few months.
