J&R started shipping the Apex 7701, the first budget universal DVD player on Dec.18. It is supposed to play DVD, mp3, SACD, DVD-A, HDCD, and have a progressive output. Pretty impressive for $299. But Apex has had a questionable reputation in terms of quality in the past. What the have done well is push the price points down, offering the first sub-$100 player and the first player to decode CDs burned with mp3s. I'm curious about the performance and was wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to get their hands on one to test and review it. Even if this sucker doesn't have exceptionally clean sound and picture, but simply does each of things it claims, at an exceptable level, perhaps it will put pressure on the big guys to put out universals of their own with higher build quality. So, anyone out there had the chance to put one to the test?
