I would like to buy a DVD this weekend and I've narrowed my choices down towards 2 movies Final Fantasy and Akira:SE. While I would like to buy both I don't have the money to do that right now. I'm going to be buying either one sight unseen. Which one should I get? the extras and the CGI on FF really intruige me but I've heard lukewarm things about this movie. What should I get "Akira" or FF?

They're both very Japanese films in terms of storytelling
I'd say go with Akira, because it has much better extras.

My perspective is that of someone generally unfamiliar with anime, but I was very impressed by AKIRA and bored to tears by FINAL FANTASY.

Go with Akira. I have both, but if forced to choose I would pick Akira.

Wow, that's not an easy one!
Personally I prefer Final Fantasy, but both movies are great and deserves to be in any collection. The audio and video on FF is first class but the remastering work done on Akira i absolutely amazing. My only complaint about Akira is the lack of a 5.1 Japanese track, but the new english dub is one of the best I have ever heard!

No contest. Go with Akira. Halfway through Final Fantasy I wanted to walk out but I stayed hoping it would get better (which it didn't). The theater was pretty full but it was very very quiet. The only time people laughed was when Steve Buscemi's voice came on....

For me FinalFantasy has more replay value. I liked AKIRA but didn't care for all of the rapid SHOUTING the characters
do. Just my take on it.

    For what it's worth...
If you really like anime (I don't) get Akira. Else get Final Fantasy.
I loved Final Fantasy (despite its narrative flaws) and was bored to distration by Akira.

This is a tough one. Coming from someone who thought both of these movies were quite overrated, I might give the edge to FF simply because of the great technology involved. Otherwise, its really a toss up.

I liked Final Fantasy more, but there is a better chance of you liking Akira easier and with less thought.
To tell the truth, I thought FF had better extras. It also looked and sounded better. In fact, FF was probably the superior of the two technically.

Well considering that Akira was made 13 years before FF, FF would more likely be better technically.
If you want a showcase piece that has great sounds and visuals, get FF. If you want a good movie, get Akira.

I've seen both films once and Final Fantasy gets my vote. Akira seemed disjointed and uncomprehensible to me. To show you how much I liked Akira I have the Akira Tin and will give it away to a younger relative this Christmas.

This thread is far too one-sided [IMG]
I have both (incl Akira tin) and I say FF is far nicer to watch in terms of the video and audio presentation - in fact, not even close.
Akira is, however, as noted, a better film.

I've never seen "Akira" but I have seen "Final Fantasy" and I own the DVD. FF had absolutely incredible visuals and DVD is the only way to watch such a movie.
