First of all, CGI will NEVER fully replace live actors (whether theatrical or in film/TV). Why? Well we've had animation for how many years? That allowed the studios to create human-like characters that would do whatever they wanted them to do and cost less than real actors. But has it fully replaced live action? No. Instead, they coexist and even meld together (a la Roger Rabbit or having celebrity voices in animated films). CGI is the next step after animation, so it will just create a new type of film.
Final Fantasy didn't have a bad script, it was just too unlike other American Sci-Fi Action films. It had too much depth for the average sci-fi action junkie and not enough nudity and explosions (plus the lack of a 'Federation'). Had they spent more time on the facial animations and made the film a little longer, it probably would have been better, but it was still very good as is.
