I don't know if it will be getting an official review from HTF, but I just saw a very funny new film from Netflix, out on DVD this week.

It is called FILM GEEK, about a video store clerk who gets fired and has to go out in the real world.

The reason I think everyone here would love it, there is a scene where someone comes to the counter with a non-letterboxed version of a film. Scotty, the clerk, tells him it isn't letterboxed and that he should get the widescreen version. "You mean with the black bars? Nah, I want this one". Scotty then gives him a look that I am sure everyone here can understand.

Great film, sort of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE meets CINEMANIA. As funny as both.

Although, kind of painful to watch. Most of the film geeks here may identify a bit with Scotty.

I'd say to check out my blog for my review, but after seeing this, and Scotty's constant plugging of his film website, I'm afraid to.

You had me until that line.

I suppose it could still be a good movie. I like Free Enterprise despite finding Swingers one of the most overrated movies of the 90s.

Film Geek is the work of a Portland, OR filmmaker named James Westby. The DVD also includes Westby's short film, The Auteur, which film reviewer David Walker of the Willamette Week called "brilliant -- and I mean brilliant." I haven't seen the film yet, but it got great reviews when it played here in theaters. (Although, I suppose one of the reasons for the good reviews could be that most of the local film reviewers had cameo roles in the picture.) Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing this on DVD.

The short is very funny, a pretentious director doing the audio commentary for his new film, a porno. The star of that is the star of FILM GEEK, playing a VERY different character. I didn't even realize it was him until half way through it.

I'm looking forward to see more of Westby's work. This really is one of the funniest movies I've seen in quite a while.
