Defeats the purpose of "live" broadcasts. And in any case, even if I wanted to avoid knowing the result all day to watch later in teh evening, it'd be impossible, given the near-saturation coverage that the World Cup will get here.

I've tried taping games broadcast at 3am before, to watch at, say, 7am instead, but it just doesn't feel the same, even it you don't the result, but know that the game's already ended and you can find the result easily if you want to. (Same applies to delayed telecasts.) There's just a different intensity to watching a game "live".

Add me to the list of excited fans. I'll be supporting . . .

like I have the last few World Cups. Tough, I know, since they are rivals in their division. Last World Cup was particularly difficult since they met up after the first round.

I'll be using the DVR as well, and depending on some of the start times, missing some work as well, uh do to sickness of course. ;)

I 'd like to have your problem. I have no problem missing sleep in order to watch the games live.

Same here. That's what we did when I lived in Cote d'Ivoire in '94, during the World Cup in the US.

I can't agree with this Ray, that has not been the experience of anyone around me anyway. Personally, Maradona was, and still is my favorite player (I was a kid, I wanted to be him :D ), and nothing he has done will change the fact that after save for Pelle, there was no greater player.

Man, I was this close to going to Germany, a friend of mine is leaving thursday :frowning:.

When I was working (for an extended period) in Buenos Aries, I returned to my (non-upscale, but still expensive and centrally located) hotel one evening to see a slew of reporters, photographers and TV cameramen outside the hotel. When I asked a few why they were there, it turned out that Maradona was suspected of hiding out in my hotel after his latest scandal.

BTW, I’ve seen his home club, Boca Juniors play (in La Boca)—a venue where one does not root for the opposition. :D

In any case, though I’m no fan of Maradona, who can forget his brilliant goal against England in Mexico City? And who can forget El mano de Dios in the same game?

Actually, the comment was shaped by an article I found on a UK football site. :) Truth is, I have never seen Kasey Keller in action (although fixtures from the Bundesliga are televised here), but Tim Howard had a fairly decent stint with Manchester United. If the US is going to go anywhere in this tournament, it will be largely due to their goaltending. The only league that interests me is the EPL. I have been to an MLS match; let's just say that I won't be returning anytime soon.

Nope. The Falklands War occured before that World Cup (1986), lending a whole new dimension to the game and that infamous goal.

Heh, I see BrianB beat me to it: my earlier comment about US commentary was based on the fact that the rest of us never refer to Keller's position as "goaltender", but as "goalkeeper".

There are a variety of other comments that US commentators use which no other English-language commentator would use, although off-hand details escape me.

I don't know who will be providing the play-by-play commentary for US broadcasts on ABC or ESPN/2, but I have serious reservations already (I wonder if it can get any worse than CBS' coverage of Formula 1).

I actually haven't noticed that too much, in US broadcasts of major international soccer games. They might not go British enough to refer to "the pitch" instead of "the field," or things like that, but their terminology doesn't seem out of place or anything.

so what time will these games be on in the US. During the day, right? Is there a way to watch them off the web.

Bah, I said it like I was aware of anything then :). I was 8, and while I knew of that war (along with Iran-Iraq, Tchad-Lybia, Lebanon, Angola and many others: watching the news was a family ritual), I certainly didn't put the match in context back then.

Thanks for the schedule Lew :emoji_thumbsup:.
