I find it hard to believe that they will re-release this. it was a pretty good special edition already. Like the previous poster said, maybe Superbit?

There was supposed to be a PlayStation 2 version that allowed you to "redirect" some key scenes and then play the movie over again, but it was a little hard for them to do the movie in real-time and look as good as it already does, plus Square lost a TON of money and decided to scrap the project altogether (AFAIK).

There were rumors of a SuperBit, so that's most likely it.

Not exactly. The whole real-time PS2 thing was just more hype for the system itself. In reality, the scene-editing thing is on the disc.

The scene editing thing that was on the DVD is different from the PS2 thing. The PS2 thing would let you alter camera angles, reedit the film, and some other things. It would actually render the film in real-time, but they decided to scrap it for the aforementioned reasons.

The PS2 version was demonstrated to Harry Knowles, and he said he was very impressed by it.

They were developing it, but they canned it around the end of last year I think, along with 3 ports of some of the videogames (Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 from PlayStation to PlayStation 2).

They surely could improve on the existing transfer. There is a ton of compression artifacts, and gradient color banding/blocking.

Superbit with DTS, please.

The disc does have a bunch of compression artifacting/banding issues which could have been alleviated by actually using the 2nd layer instead of changing 10min into the movie

Yeah Lewis, that may have something to do with it. My screen is far from huge at 55" 16x9.. but I have it pretty well calibrated now, and sit about 8' back. It is to the point where I can see almost any flaws in the image if I am looking for them. Usually, I can just get used to them after a few minutes unless they are severe, or I can just ignore them and block them out of my mind. But I still appreciate a great transfer. A FF Superbit could be one of the best transfers on DVD if they did it right.

I want to see something on par with Toy Story 2 and Dinosaur.

Jeremy-

What were rumors? The existence of a PS2 FF7/8/9 or their cancellations, because I seem to remember reading press releases about them being in development and then Square stopping production of a lot of things (no specifics, but these projects were said to have been put on hold or canned totally) to work on more important (read: Final Fantasy) games.

So how likely is it that we could see a Super Bit version (this year)?

I think this film deserves a Superbit treatment more than any other.

I am guessing that as soon as sales for the current DVD slow to a crawl, then Columbia will release the Superbit edition.
