Ever since I got my DSL line hooked up I've been downloading quite a few Mp3's. Several of which have been drum solos. Since there are several members of the HTF that are drummers, I started wondering what your favorite drum solos are and why.

My favorite one that I've seen live:

Dennis Chambers at a clinic in Wichita a few years ago. He played some things that I didn't know anyone could do on a kit. Playing fives over fours and threes blew my mind.

    My favorite recorded:

Phil Collins. I don't know the name of it or when it was recorded, but it's awesome. He does some amzazing grooves at the end of it, all the while playing an offbeat bass drum pattern.

Any Neil Peart solo. I would rank the one from Exit Stage Left as first followed by Different Stages.

I should have known that someone would beat me to the Exit Stage Left solo. Peart is a genius.

    Hey Brad,
Got any tapes of the one you did? I'm just curious to know which one of us is the better drummer. [IMG]

    Brad,

Is Moneypenny still together? I did a search on Mp3.com and found a couple of them on there.

In case you're interested, do a search on there for Redd Shift and you'll find my current band. We're the only ones with two d's in Redd.

    Kevin,

No we are not still together (mutual friendly break-up). We were girl rock. We were all about using "being in a band" to get girls. Even our demo CD was titled: Gurl Rok. Although we had a picture of a gas mask on the cover... go figure.

Simon Phillips on Pete Townshend's Deep End Live and any solo by Tommy Aldridge. Both of these men have amazing chops and are generally very underappreciated in polls such as these.

Neil Peart's YYZ solo (Exit...Stage Left)

    Mike Portnoy clinic solo

Kenny Aaronoff on his "Basics of Rock Drumming" Video

Scott Rockenfeld of Queensryche (had a suit of drum pads/triggers and got up and ran around the arena playing "himself"). Pretty wild.

Tommy Lee of Motley Crue (I know, I know, not much of a virtuoso but anyone willing to strap themselves in and play upside down gets at least an honorable mention).

Scott Travis of Racer X / Judas Priest

    Buddy Rich - "Nutville"

Van Romaine of Steve Morse's Band

Guy Gelso of Zebra in their live album

Tommy Aldridge of Ozzy / Whitesnake this guy can play!

Herb from Primus has a good solo on "Suck on this."

I never had the fortune to see him live, I've only seen Primus w/Brain.

Another good one (by a drummer's who's name I don't recall) was done at a live show I attended. It was a Maynard Fergusen concert, and his drummer had a phenomanal solo. I was with 2 friends (both drummers) and we were all blown away. Too bad his name escapes me.
