I was going to do a tourney to determine the best character actor, but I realized that that would incite too many arguements and complications about who is/what constitutes a character actor, so I decided to just conduct an informal little poll. Mine are:
-John C. McGinley (Office Space, The Rock, almost every Oliver Stone movie)
-Michael Biehn (The Rock, Tombstone, T2:SE)
    -Peter Lorre (Casablanca, Maltese Falcon)
    -Sydney Greenstreet (same as above)
-Ed Harris (The Rock, A Beautiful Mind, Truman Show)
-Lee Von Cleef (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Liberty Valance)
    -Eli Wallach (GBU)
-Sterling Hayden (Dr. Strangelove, Godfather, my sig[IMG] )
-Tim Roth (Rob Roy, POTA, Pulp Fiction)
-Steve Buscemi (every Coen Bro's movie)
    -Tom Sizemore (every war movie)

    William Demarest
    Edward Everett Horton
    Steve Buscemi
    Peter Lorre
    Luis Guzman

That's just off the top of my pointy head, I'm sure I could come up with many others...

Edit: Actually, I like the idea of a Character Actor Tournament. During the nomination process, you could require that each nom be seconded twice (or "thirded" as it's being called now). That would help weed out some of the more controversial choices. If you do run the tourney, you should probably post pics of the actors since it's not always easy to put their faces with their names.

There should be a tournament here. Absolutely.
Anyone remember Paul Gleason? Funny in Die Hard, awesome as the principal in Breakfast Club. It's a shame we haven't seen more of him lately.

Agreed that William H. Macy is one of the greats and I also think Brian Dennehy ranks right up there with him. Other favorites include Chris Cooper, Alan Rickman and Ronny Cox. I think Michael Ironside has made a damn good career out of playing heavies. I also was a big admirer of the late J.T. Walsh's work.

I'd really like to see a good definition of a character actor. I think of it as one of those "can't describe it, but I know it when I see it" kind of things.

It seems as simple as this: if you don't like tournaments, exercise your right not to vote.
