Well, isn't this a great surprise? I can't wait to upgrade my old DVD of this.

If there was ever a movie that needs the color range of Blu-Ray. It's about time.

I wouldn't really expect anything new, but has there been any word yet as to whether the existing extras from the DVD are being ported over? I haven't seen a press release on this.

I found my answer in the Kino thread; I didn't realize they were distributing this now. It looks like the features from the DVD are being retained.

I went ahead and pre-ordered it. I want it on release day, especially since it should arrive on a Tuesday, and I have Wednesdays off.

I finally got around to watching my Blu-ray of this tonight. Beautiful transfer, excellent sound, and the film really hooks you and holds your interest throughout. I hadn't watched my DVD of it in several years, so it was nice to discover this movie all over again.

With all due respect to Haynes, the model for Far From Heaven is really rather transparently, All That Heaven Allows, costarring Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman - and, at least for me, the far better of the two offerings, having been concocted by the maestro of the soapy pop opera melodrama - Douglas Sirk while the former was merely created as something of an homage by a disciple. Haynes threw in racial intolerance and homosexuality to muddy the plot of Far From Heaven and bring it more in line with 'contempo' storytelling, but otherwise, its still the story of an upper-middle-class gal who falls for a down-to-earth nurseryman, much to the disapproval of her snobby country club peers. Thanks, but I've seen this one before.

Far from muddying the plot, the addition of homosexuality and racial bigotry actually deepened and enriched it, in my opinion. A remake of the story with only the age and class differences would not have played as well for modern audiences.

I have to somewhat disagree with you, Nick.

Todd Haynes was telling stories that existed in the 1950's but they wouldn't have dared tell at the time. He was using the conventions of the glossy, classic Sirk melodrama (and there's no better example of this than ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS) in a way that Sirk and Ross Hunter may have done had the exploration of these themes been available to them. I think he's attempting to peel back the surface layer of the decade and tell the stories underneath. I don't think he's making any bones about the fact that ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS is the model for this homage/experiment as even the title is a somewhat bitter, jokey answer to the earlier film.

While I DO agree with you that Haynes' film is more in line with contemporary storytelling, I think that's the whole point of it.

I also think that ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS is the better movie, but there's more than enough room to appreciate Haynes' re-working as well.
