There is a banner in this Sunday's Fred Meyer ad over the top of Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty and The Jungle Book 2 that reads "These Disney Classics are going into the vault." Is this just a sales gimmick, or will this happen soon? Fantasia is on my wish list, and I may bump it up higher if it is going into the vault in a month or two.

Be sure to buy the Fantasia Anthology box set. I've been cherishing my copy for two years now.

    I think it's been said that it'll be re-issued (2005?) as a "Masterpiece Edition."

Thanks for all the info. How reliable is the "Masterpiece Edition" report? Should I wait? I don't have a burning desire to own it right now and I don't mind waiting a year or so, but I don't want to wait ten years, or however long Disney puts things OOP.

The supplements on the Fantasia Anthology are voluminous. (There's a bonus disc which covers both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, but mostly the former.) I would get it while you can, since I doubt all material would be repeated in any upcoming special edition.

One of my favorite box sets.

The version on laserdisc is more faithful to the original version.

The current release, when you get the box set, is about as packed as any other Disney SE, and could be for all practical purposes a Platinum release. There's really no reason to hold out for a new release, unless you have serious hang-ups about the zoomed in sequences.

Moe's suggestion here could have been made an option, of course.

Moe, that's a ridiculous idea. The reason the whole thing was dubbed was that at times the roadshow and shortened versions were edited in a way that you would have sentences coming after one another where the sound was available for one and not the other. It would have been horribly choppy to switch back and forth and even worse to have dialogue for one sentence and subtitles for the sentence following it. Scott MacQueen did the best thing under the circumstances. I'm just happy to have the longer version, even with the non-Deems Taylor narration. The picture looks fabulous and the sound is as close to Fantasound as the sound engineers could approximate in a 5.1 enviroment. By all means, any fan of animation owes it to themselves to pick up the Anthology.

The Fantasia Anthology box set may not be perfect, but it still is one of my favorite releases.

At some point, you have to say to yourself "As a film purist, am I going to let some censorship things and ADR work ruin the entire picture?" For me, the answer is no. I would go out and buy an uncensored Fantasia in a heartbeat, but knowing that such a version is unlikely to ever be released, I'm happy to have this version. I think it's a must buy now before it goes out of print.

I'm with you, Josh. The censored elements are so minimal that I can still enjoy the film, unlike say, the digital erasure of all of Pecos Bill's cigarettes in Melody Time.
