When a tiny minority of the viewing population, most of which being in an organization devoted for "cleaning up TV", has the power to indirectly leverage a 3.6 million dollar fine for a thing most people generally aren't offended by...you expect one to get angry.
Now, I am dissappointed that they aren't being all that witty while doing so too.
CBS should sue the Parent's Television Council for 3.6 million dollars for including video clips on their site without CBS' permission.
It's funny that the PTC has created an area of their site where they include the "worst" of the week, inlcluding what they consider "racy" clips. It's the perfect section for any teen to go to 24/7 to see these clips anytime they want. It's like fast-forwarding "porn" just to the good parts, all servered up and free of charge.
How can they include these clips on their web site without the network's permission?
Yep. In ninth grade we had to read a Norwegian short story about a woman and a newborn baby who lived in a shack during christmas eve. The whole thing was about her freezing and being sad and it ended with her and her baby freezing to death. That was apparently great, Norwegian literature. Then we had to read a story that used "every day spoken English" and they managed to dig out Of Mice and Men. I don't think I have to get into what that one's about... Other stories I can remember is Peer Gynt which is completely off-putting for a 14 year old. I don't think I can remember any GOOD stories...
No. Every time these people hear the word "fuck", their brains start flooding their chaste minds with hot, torrid fantasies of getting it on and grinding their pelvises in a spontaneous rebellion against their fragile prude sensibilities. Why, the very word invites the sedate to rediscover their protestant heritage and don a French Tickler, Black Mambo, or a Crocodile Rib. And we wouldn't want that.
I was completely devastated upon viewing this clip. The moral fiber of my soul has bee shaken to it's very core. If fear that I shall never be the same again...
I haven't seen this episode since it aired, but as I recall it wasn't group sex. It was three or four couples partying and having sex, privately, with their partner.
And if I remember right, most of them were gruesomely slaughtered. But I guess the PTC has no problem with that. Assholes!
Roger - your post was great! I remember reading 'Of Mice and Men' too, for a book report in school. The school system had him on thei top 5 - this is the author that we admire the most - list.
So I read 'Of Mice and Men'. Never saw so much cussing in all my life. [whisper] - and the school board liked this guy?
I don't mind that people can complain if they find something offensive. And I don't mind that the FCC has the ability to fine if something is broadcasted that is offensive. What bothers me most is the exploitation of the system to generate hundreds of thousands of complaints, by people who likely did not see the show until their watchdog group showed it to them. The FCC then thinks that their public was genuinely offended and takes an action based on bad information. It's just wrong.
Quick story - when I was in high school in the 80's the controversial book was Catcher in the Rye. We were assigned to read it for English. One of the kids asked if he could have another book to read because his mother wouldn't let him read it. I went to Catholic school and the Irish Christian Brother that taught the class told the kid he didn't have to read the book, he could elect to get an F on the paper or test instead.
