for jazz, you must have miles davis-kind of blue. in fact, everyone should own this landmark disc.

now, since i'm not really a jazz expert, i'll stick to one rock pick for each of your decades, roughly. pardon the bias toward punk/new wave/alternative in a couple of picks, but that's my bag, man!

50's: chuck berry-the great 28
60's: the band-music from big pink
70's: television-marquee moon
80's: the replacements-tim
90's: grant lee buffalo-jubilee
00's: ryan adams-heartbreaker

Here are some great artists from a few of the time periods. I've also listed my favorite album by each group.

80s - Pixies (Surfer Rosa)
70s - The Clash (London Calling)
70s - The Sex Pistols (Nevermind the Bollocks)
60s/70s - The Rolling Stones ("Exile On Main St." though you might want to start with "Hot Rocks" instead)
60s/70s - The Who (Live At Leeds)
90s - Radiohead ("OK Computer"...though maybe start with "The Bends" instead)
90s - Nirvana (Nevermind)
60s/70s - Bob Dylan ("Blood On The Tracks", though "Blonde On Blonde" is great also and was voted on the HTF as best album of all time)

I think most people would agree that those are essential albums for the time periods.

Actually i just picked up Grand Funk Railroad's Good Singing...Good Playing CD. It's quite good for the mindless rock and roll set. That and it's produced by Frank Zappa (always a plus there) In fact it hasn't left my C.D. player at all since I got it. Highly recomended.

Music forum regulars are probably getting sick of this now, but:

Marilliaon- Anoraknophobia

Forget anything you may have hear about their past. Their new material is very modern and tasteful, and they're kind of like a less-depressing Radiohead. Great stuff!

Let me suggest Pearl Jam's "Yield"...probably the best representation of their music, excellent production, and some great tunes. Very underrated album.
Steve Earle is another excellent artist. "I Feel Alright" and "Transcendental Blues" are two must-haves!
Weezer's "Pinkerton" album is great.
Anything by Ben Folds Five!
Anything by Bob Dylan!
OH, and THE RAMONES!!!!!!

Norah Jones is a must have.

Other worthy ones include: Maxwell, Sade, Holly Cole Trio, Cassandra Wilson, Basia.
