I would LOVE to see this as a 4k UHD release!I will put on my 4K wishlist a new scan and 4K UHD disc release of Excalibur. I think it would benefit from the HDR grade and improved resolution. A decent seller me thinks.
Agreed, this was a fun film that kept me in my seat!! I also owned the VHS/DVD/BD as they became available. Because it has so many dark scenes, visually, unless the film elements are as close as possible to TOCN it may still come our muddy, as did the last attenpt with the BD. Buy, I too would love to own a better edition of Excaliber, a nice cast and redition of the tale. The one standout portrayal for me was Merlin played by Nicol Williamson!! " I didin't see that coming?"I will put on my 4K wishlist a new scan and 4K UHD disc release of Excalibur. I think it would benefit from the HDR grade and improved resolution. I'd be happy for either of them of maybe even BFI? Somone to tackle the dark scenic pallet in some of those senes. The WB BD from 2011 is good until it runs into the darker scenes and it loses it's sence of depth and detail, against some senes that have that "vasolene apearence", maybe to suggest an other wordly feel?I love this picture. I feel like it would be a good entry in the Criterion Collection or Arrow. I'm a Boorman fan but I understand some people don't dig him.
How long ago was the discussion? Was this prior to 2011 when WB released the BD edition? After?I seem to recall this title being discussed and that there are element issues with it, to the point that there may not even be 2K of info on available elements, much less 4K.

I suspect people would be very disappointed. As you said, it wasn't shot to be stunning looking, but kind of dreamy. It was only a couple of years ago. It's a very soft film, with lots of diffusion.

Basically this. Diffusion filters and the inclement weather of Northern Ireland did a real number on that film's negative.I seem to recall this title being discussed and that there are element issues with it, to the point that there may not even be 2K of info on available elements, much less 4K.
I see your point, what I was trying to express is that some scenes need more definition, more background detail. There are those scenes in that smokey, dreamy, sparkley effect presentation and it goes with the intent, for those scenes but, not during the whole movie.I suspect people would be very disappointed. Boorman was unhappy with the stereo mix and decided to release it mono in its first run. Not sure after that. Was Excalibur ever theatrical released in Dolby Stereo? The original posters indicated Dolby Stereo, but I co-owned a movie theatre at the time and we were told that the poster was in error, all the prints were mono.
I'm not sure if the transfer or the encoding is to blame on these titles, as both these titles were encoded in VC-1 and there are peculiarities unique to that codec that can make transfers appear less than optimal.Even with the bad weather during shooting, I'm sure that a new 4K scan would look considerably better that the old transfer we have now. Warner have a few films with old grotty transfers that would benefit from a new scan, Bullitt & Where Eagles Dare come to mind.
It was mixed in Dolby Stereo, but very rushed, hence the poor fidelity of much of the music and fx even on the latest home formats. As a result the mass theatrical release was Mono at the director’s request. John Boorman wanted/wants to redo the soundtrack from scratch and WB/George Feltenstein is aware. Was Excalibur ever theatrical released in Dolby Stereo?
