I had the day off from work yesterday and felt like going to see a movie. The wife was at work, so I had to pick a film I knew she would not be interested in. In that respect, I nailed my selection.
"Evil Dead" is not for the faint-hearted. I knew it was going to be a rough/gory film, but ugh...it was worse than I expected.
The opening scene was probably my favorite in the whole movie. It setup something far more interesting that the rest of the movie. Had they stuck with that story-line I think the film would have been a lot more interesting than what we got. I realize that they are staying with the basic formula of the original (which I have seen many times in my youth), but I never really felt the creepy sensation of something truly evil as opposed to just truly gross.
When I think of the sense of evil that one gets from watching "The Exorcist", that is really lacking from this film (other than the opening bit). It just boils down to one gross bit after another with an ending that...without spoilers...is just silly and right out of the eighties, catch phrase and all.
I cant recommend anyone go see it unless you are really into the gore. Effects are very impressive. Almost zero CGI and some stellar work with practical effects.
Hard to rate this one...but in the end, I would give it 2.5 out of 5.
