So, what I like about this winning Best Picture is that it was an A24 film and they are getting pictures out there that are original works. So, I hope it helps them. I think it was a foregone conclusion this would win, which is fine, I did not think it was the best film of 2022 but hey, it was different and that counts in my book.

I think, as others have pointed out, it was up against a pretty weak field of pictures. My favorite of the group was Banshees and I do find that a better picture than this but that's personal taste. The rest of the nominees were, alright. I think if that was the field of films they were given to choose from...well...there was little competition.

Who would have thought The Fabelmans, Banshees, Tar and Elvis would be shut out?

EDIT: Sorry, meant to post this in the Oscars thread!
It was a forgone conclusion that Banshees and Fablemans were going to be shut out and Tar's only chance was best Actress, and Yeoh looked like the favorite after the SAG win. Elvis getting skunked was surprising though.

Ultimately, RRR won more Oscars than Banshees, Fablemans, Tar, and Elvis combined.

One.

This movie will inspire people.

First, I'm so glad I watched this alone. Are we sure there was no mishaps at the Oscars? Like someone bringing the Razzies envelopes?!

Second, do you know anyone in real life (not online) that liked this? I'm afraid if I show this to anyone I know they are going to be highly inspired and beat me to death with the same tactics.

I think there are fair number of "real life" people who happen to be in this online thread, who liked the movie. If you look at my comments, I basically liked it well enough, but am still ambivalent about its merits as a BP winner. Nevertheless, I am very happy for the people involved and their recognition and success. It's possible to hold all those (seemingly conflicting) things and have them all be true. It doesn't have to be either/or.

Back around when Avengers: Endgame came out in 2019, I happened to see this Youtube channel's send-up of that film's big final battle. They are a martial arts team who creates videos and posts them online.

Their humour and fight choreography won me over so I subscribed.

Who would have thought that a few years later 2 members of this club (both are in the video above) would be standing on stage accepting a SAG Best Ensemble award? (They are the 2 guys to the right of Ke Huy Quan in the picture below.) I had recognized them when I first saw EEAAO last year, but little did I know they would end up on stage at the SAGs! It just goes to show - follow your passion and great things can happen!

EDIT 2: the 2 guys are stunt/fight choreographer brothers named Brian and Andy Le. Andy had a prominent role as the character Death Dealer in Shang-Chi.

Here is a rehearsal vs actual scene comparison of one of the martial arts sequences:

So the opinions of people not "online" somehow matter more?

It's clear, it's a statistical question to learn how many casual viewers that you personally know, like physically see them in real life, liked this. For me personally at this moment I don't know anyone who has seen this, let alone asking them if they liked it. I will also not recommend this to them because I'm sure they will not like it and get more than angry at me.

I don't know anyone that likes it nor that named it as one of the best films they saw last year. Online, it seems like a mixed bag in terms of how people feel about it. I don't personally have any strong feelings about it. I mean, I did not think it was the best film I saw from 2022, but I have no interest in knocking it because I am happy that an A24 picture got Best Picture. A24 seems one of the companies that makes pictures that are interesting and don't focus on franchise films.

Generally, when I see that a film is a love it or hate it type of picture, I see that as a good thing. I think it usually means the film is not attempting to pander to anyone but rather is trying to express some kind of idea or ideas that the filmmakers have an interest in. So, less product, more art. Not everyone will like a picture like that and really, that is by design. I respect that and want to support it.

So, do I think people should give this a try? Yes, I do. It's alright if you don't like it. I'm not going to try to convince anybody this was the best film of 2022. I would say, if you want to try something different, try this, keep an open mind, and try not to let the hype of it winning Best Picture impact your expectations.

Still don't understand what difference it makes to gather the opinions of "casual viewers". What makes their views noteworthy?

FWIW, a friend of mine watched it - a non-online friend - and thought it was fairly good, if too long.

So early this morning, I decided to finally watch my 4K/UHD of this movie. At first I didn’t know what I was watching as I don’t like this multi-verse concept in all of these movies. However, once the family/relationships theme kicked into the storyline, I really got into the movie.

A really good movie! The awards it won were well deserved. A movie I will revisit again in a near future because I think to really appreciate this film you have to see it a few times because so much is going on in it, you’re bound by miss a couple of things in the film.

For those what care, A24 is releasing a web site exclusive edition of Everything Everywhere... in both UHD and BD (separate releases, as usual with them, no combo). Shipping planned for August 7th.

The film definitely was original, but I'll never feel the need to watch it again. One viewing of guys fighting with items in their butts is good enough for me.

Watched it.
Needed two viewings to finish it.
Watched about half a month ago then watched the other half this week.

Didnt love it. Was easily 15-20 minutes too long.

Was a very ambitious movie for sure but probably not Best Picture movie.

My thoughts about what was going on are this was a woman on the verge of a breakdown due to the many things going on around her.

The multi universes are her mind trying to resolve everything.
Trying to find an answer and the best thing for everyone around her but obviously for her immediate family.
Maybe similar to what Dr Strange was doing when he tried to figure out how to Defeat Thanos.

All the chaos was in her mind and not literal but certainly chaotic and difficult.
The end we see JLC actually snap Evelyn out of it and bring her back to the ”real end was good. Liked how it finally came to her and the family and even JLC tax specialist character.
