Czech director who blends live action and claymation in his films. I've only seen two to date, but many of the others sound pretty cool...

1. Alice - B+
2. Faust - D

Own: 0

Meant to rent Little Otik and didn't get around to it. I really enjoyed his Alice in Wonderland, but could barely get through Faust, though I do admire the artistry in his puppets.

Definitely heard of, but never seen. I think Alice is in my Netflix queue.

Kino has brought together in a single double-dvd release all the Svankmajer shorts included in Image's old separate releases, and will be releasing another collection of shorts featuring "The Ossuary" this fall.

Svankmajer's latest film, Šílení, is available on DVD with English subs here: http://www.dvdr.cz/zbozi_video.php?l...n+%A9vankmajer (I have not seen it yet, and am including this link in the hopes that a Svankmajer fan might purchase it and give us a brief review of the DVD!)

My favorite of his feature-length films are (in order of preference) "Little Otik", "Alice", and "Conspirators of Pleasure". I need to see "Faust" again, as it was my first Svankmajer film and it was many years ago. I recalled liking it, but being more than a bit baffled. It did cause me to seek out all the other Svankmajer I've since seen, so it certainly left a positive impression. Unless these have gone OOP, they should be readily available on R1 DVD (though I recommend the UK-R2 disc of "Little Otik" over the R1).

Of his short films, I love "The Pit, the Pendulum, and the Hope", though I'm not as crazy about his adaptation of Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher". "The Flat" is also fantastic, as is "Darkness/Light/Darkness". "The Death of Stalinism in Bohemia" is also quite affecting.

Does this mean you purchased the Czech DVD I linked to above? And, if so, dish! How does that twisted little baby look?

That's the DVD I have - got it from Xploited Cinema. I don't have a 16X9 set so I can't give you a definitive answer on the A/V quality, but it did look pretty good on my 27 inch tv FWIW.

You probably know this already, but Sileni is based on two Poe stories: The Premature Burial and The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether, as well as being a political allegory (man trapped between two idealogical extremes). This is the best Svankmajer I've seen yet. :emoji_thumbsup:
