I ordered two VHS tapes from Great Britain of an old show and they arrived today. However, when I put them in my VCR the video was black with lines running through it. Am I missing something here or are VHS tapes different in Europe than in the states?

Please help as I was tickled to find these tapes and will be upset if they can't be viewed.

GB and many other european countries use the PAL video system instead of NTSC. European video tapes and DVD's can't be played directly on US TV's.

You somehow have to be able to convert the PAL signal to NTSC, or have a multistandard television to view them.

You're pretty much screwed. The cheapest VCR I know of that passes a correct PAL signal is one that also contains a converter. $600 or so. MAYBE you'll be able to find an outfit willing to do a conversion for you, but it's usually $30 a tape
