Am I to understand that one cannot just connect an equalizer to a receiver with the correct cords and get it to work? There are numerous helps on the net telling how to connect the equalizer to the receiver and have it work. Why then will it not work? If it will not work, exactly what has to be done to get it to work?

Well...
EQ used to be connected via "tape loop". That hasn't existed on AVR in 15 years-ish.
The "other way" to connect an EQ is with pre-out/in. How much money do you have for a receiver?
I'm sure NAD, Anthem and Arcam would LOVE to sell you one with pre-out/in.
You could also buy a Pre-pro and a separate amp. A "cheap" new Pre-pro is $1400.
That "cheap" Pre-pro would be the Integra DTC 40.3(I think I have the model number correct)
Edit:
It is the DHC 40.2. The 40.3 will be out soon, so you might be able to swing a floor sample for $1200 here soon...
Edit 2:
The DHC 40.2 is only $1200. Floor sample soon for $1000 probably.
