Due to the size of the last thread and the difficulty with posting to and reading of that thread I have continued it here in Part II.

    Dean,
Where did you hear this about the DVD? Has someone already done a review or something of it? I know the guy from Fox interviewed recently said it sounded amazing....

From what I hear, that laserdisc was the best sounding home release EVER, so the sound on this DVD should be quite a treat. Very lucky for me that I'll be moved into my new apartment by then, with a roommate who has a full 5.1 setup [IMG].

Phantom Menace will do great in sales, but the winner of the year on DVD will be hands down Shrek. [IMG]
    I predict this. [IMG]

Haha Antonio I guess you also noticed that the [IMG] doesn't work. Oh well, I changed mine to a coolie dude. Anyways, I will take the bet that The Phantom Menace will beat Shrek in DVD sales. I know that a ton of people bought the VHS, but c'mon this is STAR WARS ON DVD!

I'm a die-hard dts guy, BUT if all Dolby Digital soundtracks sounded like the Phantom Menace LD, I'd convert that day, no questions asked. [IMG]

The sound quality of the laserdisc is incredible, but alot of it is the mix as well. Every little sound is just perfectly placed within the soundfield. The soundtrack for this movie was truly a work of art by Gary Rydstrom (sp?)
I am already planning the Oct 16th party!! I can't wait.

Just because the DD-EX track on the LD sounds better than various DTS tracks (of OTHER movies!!!), does not mean that a DTS track of Episode I wouldn't sound any better. It's the mix, guys. Not Dolby Digital, but the MIX that makes the Ep. I LD track sound better than the DTS tracks of other movies. Let's not compare apples and oranges. You can only say that a DD-EX track is all we need for the DVD when you have directly compared it to a DTS-ES (Discrete) track of the same sound mix. I personally have no doubts that the DVD's DD-EX track will sound utterly amazing, but there's absolutely no denying that a DTS-ES track would sound better, especially in Discrete mode at full bit-rate in the new 24/96 format. I'm probably just beating a dead horse here as it seems DTS will never appear on a Star Wars DVD because THX and Dolby are attached at the hip, IMHO.

Does anyone know if the set will include the extra footage of the lightsabre fight at the end ? I know there not in the deleted scenes section, but I was hoping for an Easter Egg of some sort
I have seen a couple of documentaries which show the cut parts of the fight scenes with all the special effects added, but this was when the film came out, and I was hoping Lucas may have re-edited this into the film

    Thanks for the info
I thought the music cues at the end of the film seem a little disjointed, the most obvious being the cut from Amidala trying to get past the battle droids, to Anakin flying towards the Droid Control Ship. I thought this was where the cut scenes from the lightsabre fight may be dropped in.
I didn't realise there was other footage cut from the other battles.
We can but hope that we get an extended cut someday
