I think Brian's decision makes perfect sense. He is purchasing a 47" widescreen television that happens to also have a 53" screen for 4:3 material. I dont see how his 47" of widescreen real estate is any less optimized than a traditional widescreen set, one just ends at the black bars, one ends at the end of the screen.
To me home theater means more than just dvd's, it means the classic movies I have still lingering on vhs, movies on television, and of course dvd.
Add to that if you play any entertainment games at all, barely 1/3 are available for widescreen, even on xbox.
I dont know, it just seems to me he bought a television that covers all of his viewing needs.
