During one point on each show so far (at least the ones I can remember) the Commander has problemsSpoiler:steering a space pod or shuttle. He bumps into things.

    I thought it was
ARCHER: "We want to do this dangerous thing!"
T'PAL: "Vulcans would not do such a thing silly human"
ARCHER: "We're tired of you suppressing us! We're doing it anyway!"

Then, one day T'Pol figures it out, and treats Archer like a spoiled brat.
"Captain, I think it would be incredibly illogical for you to apologize to the alien commander with the massive space armada. We vulcans have a protocol for this; we'd slap him in the face, then grab his wife's ass."
"Oh yeah, T'Pol? Well, you can take your Vulcan protocols, and go for a walk with them. Not only am I going to apologize to that alien commander, I'm going to bring him a bottle of wine!"
*not quite a smile from T'Pol*

    Peter,
The bad shuttle piloting inthe the first 2 episodes was done by the first officer (Dude hallucinating in cave).

I have a question, is Trip the first officer as well? There doesn't really seem to be one, but he's always having dinner with Archer and T'Pol so I'd guess he was -- which would make him the first engineer to be first officer on a Star Trek show (or maybe it just makes this the first Star Trek show who doesn't have a character who is purely a "first officer" with no other function).

Trip and the captain seem to have a history, whereas beyond the linguist, the rest are new. Hanging with his bud, if you will. I like the "reverse psychology" idea for T'Pol. Archer DOES act like a 2 year old sometimes.

T'Pol is the first officer. It was stated explicitly. The Vulcans requested it, in return for giving Starfleet stellar maps.
    Tripp is the second officer.

Well, I think the issue of the first officer is kind of complicated. In the pilot during the "gel scene" [IMG] T'Pol was saying how she thought everyone at command would agree that her Vulcan rank put her above Trip. So, in terms of the human's rank i guess Trip is right below Archer, but T'Pol complicates things since she isn't in Starfleet. Hence, the big argument between her and Trip concerning whether to go back for Archer at the end of the pilot (her rational for finally deciding to go back wasn't really fully explained to my satisfaction either).

    Thanks for the review, Sean.
I wasn't really paying attention to what T'Pol was ssaying during that scene. [IMG]

Why do the first officer and the captain and whoever else eat dinner together?

Because they like each other's company? Honestly, I think it's just that - the element of friendship etc that is sometimes missing from other Trek shows.

It's a naval tradition for the senior offices to eat together separate from the rest of the crew. Since Trip is first officer (although his rank is superceded by T'Pol's Vulcan rank), he gets to sit at the grown-ups' table.

On the 10/17 Episode (Trip's Pregnancy) Capt. Archer called him "Commander".
