    Yet more on "sweeps"-month episodes.

    Enterprise: "Cease Fire"
    episode: #41
    original airdate: February 12, 2003
    writers: Chris Black
    director: David Straiton
synopsis: "Both the Vulcans and the Andorians make a claim to a small planet and military conflict soon erupts. As the fighting goes on, the Vulcans announce they are willing to discuss cease fire terms. However, Imperial Guard officer Shran believes only Captain Archer can be trusted to mediate the situation, which drags the Enterprise crew into the tense situation."

I don't know, I'm sort of looking forward to this one. If there's one thing that the Enterprise crew has gotten right, and made interesting to me, it's the pre-Federation politics between the Terrans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Klingons. Seeing the tension among these groups is fun, for me - a heck of a lot more fun than the Temporal Cold War, that's for sure.

Then again, it's Chris Black, who, while not being B&B-awful, clearly isn't up to Shiban (or even Sussman & Strong) as a writer.

    Well, here's hoping, anyway.

In perusing the Web for comments on Star Trek's declining popularity and Enterprise's cellar-dweller ratings, I came across this headline at one of the fan sites: "Rick Berman is Star Trek's nemesis."

Even the fanboy sites' members acknowledge something is terribly wrong.

Trust me, fan boys sites are much harsher on ENT than anyone in this forum. To them it's personal.

I enjoyed this one. To me, it sort of felt like TOS Star Trek.

Tripp positioning the Enterprise between the Vulcans and Andorians was sort of like something Scotty would do while in command.

Stubborn Archer trying to do good by Jeffrey Comb's Andorian. And beating up the bad guys Kirk style.

I was waiting for the Vulcan Ambassador to give Archer the Vulcan salute and wish him to Live Long and Prosper. I guess as Archer said, he still doesn't respect him.

Regarding the Andorian's antennas, well, they didn't know what they did on TOS Trek either.

I enjoyed the female Andorian, played by the same actress who played Worf's mate from THG.

Ah. This is more like it.

Given the time period Enterprise takes place in, I think the best way to do it may be as a historical drama. Here, we're getting to see what may be a pivotal event that leads to the formation of the Federation (and explains why humans are such a key member despite being relatively new and less physically potent), and it gives off the feel that Soval and Shran are, to the 24th Century characters we're used to, historical personages. It's the right atmosphere for the show, and Chris Black pulled it off with just the right amount of action/adventure fun.

It's not perfect - Gary Graham, while being a great "cop stuck investigating the weird crimes" (Alien Nation, MANTIS, Steel), is woefully miscast as Soval. Normally, it's a small enough role to let it go, but he's a major character here, and it brings the episode down a notch or two.

But, nonetheless, I think this is the strongest Enterprise of the year, and perhaps since the pilot. More like this, please.

(So, of course, next week we get another TCW episode. I leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine whether that stands for "Temporal Cold War" or "Total, Complete Waste")

It makes 'em look more alien. [IMG] (It sure was my impression when I first saw "Journey to Babel" lo those many years ago.)

Agreed, this is a slight improvement. Not a major one, though. Remember, we've been so used to bad Star Trek for so many years that even a passable episode seems good.

This is one of only about two or three second-season episodes I wouldn't mind seeing again.

I might actually bother catching this one on Sunday night...

It's been many a moon since I've been able to muster up that much enthusiasm about this show.

Maybe this was paying "homage" to ST VI: Undiscovered Country. This time its the Vulcans and Andorians who are the enemies, trying to reach a peaceful settlement, but there are factions that don't want peace (Suzie Plakson). Seems like so many actors are appearing in different roles over TNG, DS9, Voyager and now ENT. They are good actors, but hope they are not stuck in doing ST because of type-casting.

Hey, once they discover you're not allergic to (or at least willing to wear) the prosthetic makeup, they'll call you forever. [IMG]
