You do know that there are many different categories in the Emmy's which are not what you see on your typical Daytime Emmy and Primetime Emmy awards right? They are given out by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Sony won in the Technology & Engineering category. Why didn't the Wii win? Maybe they didn't even submit their controller to be considered? Who knows?

This is all a little silly, but I have a theory. Because the Sixaxis Controller applies motion-sensing technology to an *existing* and very popular design - maybe then the predicted "ramifications" of such a technology are seen as "larger" than those of the more interesting, quite popular, and yet still somewhat niche Nintendo Wii (at least in the mass public consciousness - and the Emmy is nothing if not "Mass Public"). Besides, the Wii is still so difficult to find on store shelves that it may have escaped the attention of the Emmy committee because no one can get their hands on one!

It appears the Emmy was not for the sixaxis controller, but instead both Sony and Nintendo were awarded for changing the way games are played by replacing the joystick to the more user friendly handheld designs in use today.

Update: The SIXAXIS did NOT win an Emmy. It was for the DualShock, which for its time was certainly groundbreaking and remains a great controller design, but Sony trying to pass it off to the SIXAXIS ... well, that's typical Sony. Absense of rumble and addition of yet-to-be-fully-utilized technology, regardless of basic aesthetic similarities between both generations of controller, does not an Emmy make.

Sony has retracted the original statement.

The story in the original link (above) has been corrected, too.

That explains a lot. Is there a large multinational corporation out there that isn't a bunch of soulless bastards?

This was complete fluff, plain and simple. Sony is also a movie studio and this is just an example of a PR award that's B.S. and nothing more. Most all writers are saying the same thing and making fun of the award so really it's backfiring on Sony.
