Eliminate Credit Card Junk Mail? (1 Viewer)

I recently ordered credit reports. One of the agencies offered up a phone number where you can call and permanently exclude your name from credit card mailing lists. There's also an option to exclude your name for 2 years only. The number is 1-888-5OPTOUT (567-8688).

The recording says it's the "Credit Reporting Industry Prescreening Opt Out Number." It says it will opt you out of lists compiled from Experian, Transunion, Equifax, and a fourth company with whom I am not familiar(Innovus?). You punch in your phone number, confirm your house number, say and spell your name, punch in your SSN and that's it. I completed the process for my wife and me in 3 minutes.

I hate credit card mailings. I shred them because I'm afraid that if the stupid thing fell into the wrong hands, I might be screwed.

If this is legit, I'd love to do it. I probably get 2-3 applications a day in the mail from those guys.

I'd be wary of giving out my SSN over the phone to anything or anybody but the above searchs seem to indicate that it's a legit number....
