Being a fan of Russian history and liking to believe that I'm a fan of good movies, I've been pondering buying Criterion's set for awhile. (That is, despite my steadfast belief that Criterion overprices.) Anyway, since I haven't seen Ivan the Terrible or Nevsky, so I'm hesitant to do so.
For those of you who have, is it worth buying it sight unseen?

My review is at http://www.digitallyobsessed.com/sho...w.php3?ID=1119
The short version is that if you like things Russian, you will probably like these movies; they (especially Nevsky) have a very Slavic sensibility about them, which the music greatly supports. Alas, Nevsky is not in good shape, and the audio for it will never sound good, thanks to Stalin. I will refrain from further comment on the 'restoration', having already created sufficient tempest in a samovar with that one. We're not likely to see a better edition, how's that? The extras are marvelous.
