So I was using the internet on my PC and my GF was watching television in the adjoining room the other day (TV being used as a tuner with the ausio being run through the reciever for pro-logic) when suddenly there is an extremely loud "CRACK" sound and everything becomes silent.

My Kenwood vr-407 has died! The faceplate lights-up and pressing various source buttons make everything work, theres just no sound. I follow the instruction manual's guidelines to reset the system (unplug the receiver and hold in the power button while plugging it back in) to no effect.

No audio from the radio tuner or any of the AV inputs :frowning:

I pull the top and the only readilyvisible fuse is undamaged. And repairing the system will probably cost far-more than its worth. Oh well, at least I have a good excuse to upgrade my receiver now:)

So, anybody have a good recommendation for a 5-channel receiver (I don't have a DVD-audio or SACD player, so I don't need one with a 5.1 analog input)? I also mention I'm poor, so I'll have to save up for a new receiver too. I hope I can find $500 or so by the end of the month.

If you don't have to have Pro Logic II, I suggest you buy a used receiver. It's a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck.

Hey, my Kenwood vr-517 has been doing the same thing lately of cracking and then shutting off... But I am still able to get sound out of it for about 8 minutes and it does it again. So I vacuumed it out and decided to put a fan on top of it just for the hell of it pointing into it and now it doesn't do it anymore. It might be overheating (even though it really doesnt make sense since I wasn't stressing it) Just a suggestion.

Maybe you weren't "stressing" it, but if the receiver isn't properly vented it will shut down due to overheating.

The receiver is on a shelf with about six inches of clearance above it. I removed the top of the case and cleaned/dusted everything inside. Still no sound from any of the speakers.:frowning:

Oh well, gues it's time to go check-out Ebay.

Check www.gotapex.com for receiver deals. I just saw that J&R has refurbished Onkyo TXSR-500's for $150, and there's a Denon model listed for under $300. The Onkyo will do everything your Kenwood does, albiet with a little less power. It's also got Pro Logic II, which is a nice added bonus.

I'm convinced Kenwoods are junk -- the IR sensor on my Kenwood 407 hasn't worked for at least a year, and my parents' 209 IR sensor stopped working about the same time. I know I'll never buy one again.

In my case it would turn off even when i disconnected all wires from the back of it since it had said in the manual of a possible speaker short problem i tried that. It's weird.
