I didn't like this episode all that much, too much of Carol's angst and insecurities on display.

Now, Mike the Decision Maker subplot was probably the most entertaining part of the episode, but it couldn't really save it from the other 2 subplots.

    Mike's toast was so jaw-droppingly bad, it's a classic! "Marriage is...like prison."

Okay, I did laugh when the driver's ed teacher was sad and was just driving in circles.

The DecisionMaster was great. I did like Carol's bad pirate fantasy as well, but Mike was once again the hero of the episode. That was the worst toast in the history of the world!

I think the difference between men & women has never been summed up as well as the Booze Luge scene:

    Ed (man): "Awesome!"
    Carol (woman): "Disgusting."

    Biggest problem with this ep:

    No Eli
    No Phil
    No Shirley
    No Cheswick
    No Mark
Molly reduced to bit parts in Carol's bad writing fantasies

It seems the writers have bought into the NBC promo department's "America's Love Story" line and are concentrating on Ed & Carol so much that the supporting characters, who provide the show's unique background texture, are getting lost.

It's hurting Ed & Carol as well, because instead of letting the relationship grow naturally, the whole year seems like a headlong rush to a season-finale wedding, with invented conflicts along the way (next up: Ed's ex-wife. Turns out he was married to Caroline in the City. [IMG] ).

I dunno, maybe it should have ended with last year's finale.

I have to disagree...I liked this episode. The book scenes being acted out was pretty original, and the toast make me laugh.

Overall I liked this episode, as well, if no other reason that we had a (temporary) escape from the writers throwing yet another episode full of Ed and Carol fighting at us. Looks that will change on Friday, though. [IMG]

The character of Mike has really stolen the show this season - just incredibly funny and yet still feels "real." I wish we would see more of Nancy's affection for him, though - seems like she tolerates him rather than loves him. The Decision Master plot was excellent.

As someone who writes for a living, I loved Carol's plotline - while I don't write fiction, I've had writer's block, and I understand how daunting that blank page (or screen) can be. And we got to see Nancy as a tavern wench!

Thought the driver's ed teacher plot was a bit thin and poorly resolved.

Agree with CraigS about the missing cast members - it definitely hurts the richness of the show.

Well, Tom Kavanaugh directed the episode, and I wonder if he wanted to keep focus on the core cast for this episode, rather than also have to deal with whatever antics the Stuckeybowl crew had in store for Ed.

My favorite exchange of the night?

Nancy: Honey, why is the sofa up on blocks?
    Mike: Stadium seating.

    Josh Randall's hilarious.

I also really liked the scene with the rearranged living room furnture in the Decision Master's house and the lines Sean quoted were the best of the night.

Reminder: Ed airs at 8:00 pm CST tonight!

Is this the show's new permanent time slot?

Unless it gets renewed, this will most probably be the last season/episodes of Ed (all in the Friday timeslot), and then in February/March, Miss Match will take back the Friday timeslot.

The stadium seating joke was terrific.

I also liked the tic-tac-toe game the kids performed when the driver's ed teacher left the room.

    Patrick,

Is this speculation on your part? Any sources for that? Just curious...

    "?

Did you notice that the winner started with two X's? Cheater.

NBC is definitely planning to replace Ed with Miss Match after they burn off the new Ed episodes. It is widely speculated that this is the final year for Ed, since it was a miracle they came back this year and they haven't really picked up the ratings.

Well then before it gets cancelled bring on some more Dr. Jerome!

You know, every week I want to throw something at Carol. She's engaged to Ed, she's got a great job and has Molly as her best friend. I'd kill for that. And all she can do is whine.

This was the episode where I started screaming at the TV. That Carol is so high-maintenance I can't stand it anymore. How many times can the writers have her waffle and change her mind? Move to NY, don't move to NY. Move to NY again, don't move to NY again. Want a wedding, don't want a wedding. It's just maddening. I hate that they have taken a character that used to be really generous and likable and turned her into a selfish and self-absorbed head case. And Ed's jittery jibber jabber is becoming really grating.

Now that Warren seems to be out of the picture, Mike is the funniest and best thing about the show.
