I used this one in grad school. In my opinion, its greatest strength is the interface is scalable depending on how advanced of a user you are. Highly recommended!

It's free and fully functional but has some minor nag screens until you register.
Notepad is good for learning I suppose but there are way better text editors out there. I've used Ultra Edit, Text Pad, and JBuilder's editor. Notepad has no intelligent cursor placement, something that is imperative for any type of coding since indentation is used extensively (at least it should be). That's what bothers me the most about it. Also syntax highlighting helps with debugging or helps save time by preventing bugs before compiling. I'm very much against anything that generates code for anyone who wants or needs to learn how to program or write HTML.
