Laser's Edge has Saves Christmas as widescreen. They have Goes to Jail as full frame! A lot of confusion with these titles. If they turn out to all be widescreen, it'll be a bargain to pick them up. $7.44 a piece at Laser's Edge?
Now, they just need to release the little-known Ernest porn movie: Ernest Goes to Town. ;) *
Argh. The back cover on DVD Empire confirms it: Goes to Jail is full screen. But, was this released theatrically? The only one I saw at the theater was Goes to Camp, so I don't know. Nope. The small text at the bottom says it has been modified.
Scared Stupid is also full screen. Why is there so much variation in these titles? Well, at least they're cheap. DVD Empire has them for $6.99. Double
* - Okay, I know that was juvenile, but work with me. I'm just making it fun. :)

"You're the man who killed my brother and I'm the man that's going to kill you".

I love Ernest Goes To Jail.

And, my favorite from the Goes to Jail:
"A three-legged dog walks into a bar and says, 'I'm looking for the man who shot my paw!'"

There's not much variation...as I said, July 15th, DVDReview was wrong here. ;)
Seriously, though, it's been planned for a long time now that Camp would be 2.35:1 anamorphic, Christmas 1.85:1 letterboxed and the other two fullscreen. That's what I heard in June, and nothing seems to have changed since then.

Well, with so many Ernest threads and movies, it's hard to keep up with what's what. The main thing I meant by variation, though, is the movies themselves. Why are half of them full frame and half not? Maybe Camp and Christmas are the most popular. I've only see Camp and Jail, and Jail seems to be the one that turns up on cable most often. I just assumed those two were safe.

THAT question is not so easily answered! :D
Figuring out why Disney releases some films in OAR and some in Fullscreen is a mystery to me. I suppose in most cases, it has to do with what is cheapest. If the Laserdisc release was Fullscreen, there's a good chance the DVD release will be as well. But even then, that's not definite. And the converse - if the LD is OAR - does NOT mean that the DVD will be OAR.
For instance, why are Mighty Ducks 2 + 3 anamorphic widescreen when Jungle 2 Jungle and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids will be Fullscreen?! I can't figure it out...Disney is quite erratic with their catalogue releases and it really pretty much sucks.

Luke, I have a theory about that which I posted at DVDTalk earlier today:
I believe with Disney's recent line of budget releases, they decided which titles to release and to decide on the specs of each title, they rolled a die.
Disney exec: "OK, so if I roll a 1 or 2, it'll be 1.33. If I roll a 3 or 4, it'll be non-anamorphic widescreen. If I roll a 5 or 6, it'll be anamorphic widescreen."
That's the only explanation I have for it. Why else would Mighty Ducks 2 & 3 be released today in anamorphic widescreen, while Honey I Shrunk the Kids and its sequel are both reportedly P&S when they were released the same day with the same MSRP?
:D

For those that have got Ernest Goes to Camp - is it really 2.35:1?
Yes, it is. I picked it up earlier today and tested it. It is Anamorphically enhanced as well.

Any official word on the other titles?? There are five different stories on these titles and none of them have the same info, except that "Scared Stupid" is P&S.

I don't have any information about any of the other ones, but I just got done watching Ernest Goes to Camp and yes, it is anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1. Not only that, but I am pleased to say that although this by far a reference transfer, it is MUCH better than I expected it to be. There are many brand new movies that have come out recently that don't look as good as this. Considering how little effort Buena Vista put into these titles, I was pleasantly surprised at the transfer on this movie. It is sharp, clear, and most of the scenes are very colorful. The night scenes arent overly grainy, and there were no significant compression artifacts to be seen anywhere in the movie. Heck, theres not even any noticable edge enhancement!! It is not picture perfect, but I'm pretty confident that none of you will be disappointed in the transfer (especially at the $9.99 and cheaper price you can get this for).
The audio is a little less spectacular, but gets the job done. Its almost entirely centered in the center channel and has very few surround effects, and almost no lower end.
Either way, I'm just glad to own this movie in OAR and in such good quality...just too bad the other movies weren't treated as nicely.

So, was Camp Super35 or something? I don't remember it looking that cropped on VHS. IMDB lists it as spherical 1.85:1, but they have been wrong before. It's good that it's in its OAR on DVD, though.

The only one of these I've found is Scared Stupid, which is full-frame, so I probably won't be buying that one. I want Goes to Jail, but alas, it's also apparently MAR. If I can find them, I'll probably grab Camp and Christmas, since they're OAR.

This could be worse, of course. A few years ago, who would have thought we would be here debating the original aspect ratio and artistic intent of the Ernest movies.

Could someone compare the Camp DVD to the pan&scan video?
To see if it is Super 35,or not.
Thanks.:)

I just picked up Ernest Saves Christmas today and it is indeed letterboxed... WHY.. it makes NO sense? With Ernest Goes To Camp Anamorphic!!

Grr... Disney's really starting to annoy me. But at LEAST IT'S OAR! Sheesh.

Chris.
