Sorry about that mistake Byron. Did Joan appear in the pilot could that be what I am thinking which aired on Dynasty?

I cannot wait for this series to come out. I am trying to remember some of my favorite plots on Dynasty. I do remember being kicked out early of my old house in 1986 and having to live in a small apartment until my house was finished building. The new owner of my old house was a woman and she wanted a fast move in date.

I had watched the Dynasty finale where Alexis finally gets hold of the mansion and tells Blake to get out. I thought boy I know how Blake feels because I just went through this.

So funny now that I look back at it.

Joan was in the 2-part "Titans" episode in the Sixth Season of "Dynasty", which acted as an introduction to "The Colbys" series to follow. Although I think that Alexis and Sable are only seen having a phonecall.

When the first season of The Colbys was originally shown in the US, did each episode or most episodes in the first season have a "Last time...on The Colbys" recap at the beginning? Also, was the first season of The Colbys filmed alongside Dynasty's sixth season, or did the first season of The Colbys start filming earlier in 1985?

Hoping the episodes in Shout's complete series set of The Colbys look as good as Dynasty looks on DVD in most of it's seasons, transferred to HD. They should look better than how they looked when CBS Drama showed the series.

Here's the classic scene from Season Six's cliffhanger, where Alexis and Ben finally managed to evict Blake and his "blonde tramp" from the mansion!

I also had another good fan Richard give me a tip on the Amazon link. As you can see there is a difference in price between Shout and Amazon.

Should come down though as some have speculated at Amazon. The reviews there are good about the series.

Will likely get Shout's complete series DVD set at some point, once the price has come down a bit. I doubt it will get released on DVD in the UK by CBS Home Entertainment's UK branch. A European DVD release possibly?

It would have been good to get "The Colbys" in packaging that matches the art used for "Dynasty" - so it would all marry up when displayed together on a shelf - but no matter. Just happy to know it's being released in the first place.

I've just finished watching the cliffhanger of Season Eight. Krystle has gone missing from the mansion after her headaches returned... Linda Evans has said in interviews that she never really intended to leave "Dynasty" altogether - she only wanted a break after 9 years of solid, hard work - hence why Evans only appears in a few episodes of Season Nine before Krystle goes into a coma in Switzerland. She had just assumed that the show would continue for a tenth season and that Krystle's recovery from her brain trauma would resolve itself then.

Now, here is a vintage 80's show that ought to have been on Blu-ray a long time ago. Perhaps no other TV show more influenced a generation in terms of fashion. Can anyone forget the perfume brand created "especially for Crystal", or the trend in women's clothes toward turbans and VERY larger shoulder pads, or the Chrysler Corp. naming a sedan after the show? Or the After 8 tuxedo line for men?

Favorite moments for yours truly: the Moldavian massacre - of course, Joan Collins and Linda Evans taking a tumble in the wading pond in season 2 for a knock down/drag out cat fight, the unveiling of the second Steven Carrington, played by Jack Coleman, the stormy night disappearance of the first Fallon, Pamela Sue Martin, on her second wedding ceremony to Jeff at the mansion, and, Nick Toscani assaulting Blake at the mountain retreat and leaving him for dead, Alexis' sister, Caress Morell (the spectacular Kate O'Mara), conspiring to ruin her wicked sister's reputation with a tell-all bio for having been placed in a Honduras prison, the season 1 cabin fire finale that left Alexis and Crystal ready to burn to death, the La Mirage fire, set by a totally whacked out Pamela Bellwood during Dominique's engagement party, and finally, the near strangulation of Collin's Alexis on the stairs of the Carrington mansion by Blake after he discovers she has taken over his company and gained possession of the deed to his home. "So take this cheap junk, and your blonde tramp and get out of my home!" Alexis says, causing Blake to fly into a predictable rage.

Let's be honest for a moment: Dynasty was hardly a perfect show. It set trends and caught the 80's spend/spend zeitgeist with gusto and for that - and a host of other reasons I cannot quantify in brief herein, I absolutely love it. But along the way there were a lot of ridiculous misfires. James Farantino's Nick Toscani was a magnificent villain in season 2 who NEVER resurfaced in season 3 or beyond. He simply struck Blake on the noggin at the end of season 2, left him for dead, and was never hunted down for the crime. Huh?!? Fallon's disappearance, from curious headaches was obviously meant to write the character out of the show after Pamela Sue Martin erroneously assumed she could do better elsewhere in films and on TV.

So why bring her back as Emma Samms? Don't get me wrong, I like Samms, but she didn't even remotely resemble Sue Martin, physically, leaving writers to scramble with ways of explaining exactly what had happened. Other needless excisions: Blake's brother, Ben (Christopher Cazenove - a superb baddie) who plots the venomous destruction of Blake with Alexis's help, and is instrumental in sending Caress back to her Honduras prison hell hole, suddenly gains morality and gets virtuous one season later; he and Blake parting as friends...double huh?!?!

Kate O'Mara's Caress thrown under the bus after this same season ended and completely written out of the show without further explanation. What a waste of a perfectly good and supremely viperous vixen. Fallon getting sucked up in a space ship a la a literal rip off of Speilberg's Close Encounters of a Third Kind. How did Richard and Esther Shapiro NOT get sued for plagiarism for that one?!?!? Why bring Bo Hopkins' jilted missing Matthew Blaisdale back for no apparent reason, except to take the Carrington's hostage for two episodes at the beginning of season 9? Having a cross-dressing senator, impersonating Joan Collins, responsible for the balcony death of tennis pro, Mark Jennings. Whoa! Leap of faith there. Trying to squeeze in too many plot twists and Dynasty II Colby cast members into season 7; having Alexis drive her car over a bridge because her crying made her mascara run, and, last but not least - ending the series without a proper finale. The Dynasty Reunion - still unavailable - tried to tie up loose ends - badly. No, Dynasty's writing was generally sloppy - really sloppy.

Tightest, best written seasons are probably Seasons 2 and 4. Everything seemed to click and succinctly. The show soared in popularity largely because of Collins Alexis and the brilliantly assembled ensemble. But otherwise, it became weak and formulaic as time wore on. Characters like Diahann Carroll's Dominique Devereaux and the aforementioned Kate O'Mara as Caress were utterly wasted, while giving waaayyy tooooo much play time to actors like Leann Hunley and James Healey who couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. One dimensional characters, even more threadbare plots; this is what eventually killed the series. Because let's not forget that the Moldavian massacre was the highest rated episode in nighttime soap history and that same year, Dynasty passed the venerable Dallas in the Nielsen Ratings; no small feat. In fact, Dynasty's Nolan Miller wardrobe caused Dallas to step up its game and go the glam-bam route shortly thereafter; a decision that did not suit the more down to earth Ewing clan at all!!!!

CBS Paramount took their sweet time getting this series to DVD in less than stellar condition. It's okay, but not great. And we're still missing Dynasty II: The Colbys, one of the best spin offs. Currently, the release of seasons 6 and 7 of Dynasty make no sense because when the Colbys' had its debut the cast, as well as story lines were divided between the two shows. When will we get Dynasty II: The Colbys on DVD. How about the who darn mess on Blu-ray, a la the spectacular Columbo Box Set or Knight Rider offerings from Universal - currently only available overseas, but in region free hi-def? We also should have had the spectacular 'After Dynasty' special made in the U.K. - nearly an hour and a half of Dynasty-ana with the stars who made it famous and a fabulous retrospective besides.

Nick, "The Colbys" is coming out VERY SOON from Shout Factory. Everybody here is very excited for it. Loved reading your post, and agree, the writing shifted wildly from season to season, and characters with plenty of mileage were often dumped before their time (Caress being a prime example). Things returned to form when Sable moved over to "Dynasty" in Season Nine. It became compulsive viewing again at a time when the quality had been sliding. Just sad that things were left all up in the air. The Reunion didn't clear up much, and if anything it just left more things untied.
