I know there is a site with DVD comparisons but is there a site that says what is not available in certain regions. I am going to Paris in a few weeks and if there is something not available here I want to pick it up. I am in Region 1 by the way.

The list would be huge! There are a couple of similar list in the international forum over at dvdtalk.com

I agree that the list might get quite long. It also depends on your tastes.
dvdbeaver.com has a film noir list which points to the titles not available in region 1:

http://dvdbeaver.com/film/film-noir.htm

My personal favorites that are available in France and not available in region 1 are:
1. http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

2.http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

3. http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

4. http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

5. http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

6. http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

7. http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...965133-4344125

You also have to be careful with French editions and make sure that they have English subtitles. This might get tricky as this information is not readily avaialble. http://www.dvdfr.com./index.php is quite helpful regarding the subtitle information.

It's worth mentioning that the classic 3 GODFATHERS with John Wayne has just been released by Warners in England (region 2).

Hello every one, I'm new to the forum.I'm French and indeed
it seems that a lot of films, not only French films actually, are
still not available in region 1. But don't worry we have the same
problem in region 2 and of course our problem is much bigger
if you compare to the large number of dvds available in region 1.
I have a multizone dvd player and so it's really not a problem.
When a dvd is not available in region 2, I buy the region 1 dvd.
About one third of my dvd collection is region 1.

But now let's try to help you and maybe you would help me
in return if I have a question about a region 1 dvd .

I've made a list of films which were released in region 2 and which
are still not available in region 1. Here's the list and don't hesitate
to ask me questions about these films because for much of them
I have them in my collection.

WESTERN: - The Big Sky by Howard Hawks
- Broken Arrow by Delmer Daves
- Garden of Evil by Henry Hathaway
- Fort Apache by John Ford
- The Gunfighter by Henry King
- Johnny Guitar by Nicholas Ray
- Man of the West by Anthony Mann
- The Three Godfathers by John Ford
- Jesse James by Henry King
- Western Union by Fritz Lang (region 2 UK)
- Fistful of Dynamite by Sergio Leone

VARIOUS : - Kafka by Steven Soderbergh
- Delicatessen by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
- Moonfleet by Fritz Lang
- Secret beyond the Door by Fritz Lang
- Cry of the City by Robert Siodmak
- Fallen Angel by Otto Preminger
- Men in War by Anthony Mann
- The African Queen (2 discs edition) by John Huston
- They live (2 discs edition) by John Carpenter

There are certainly other titles only available in region 2 but I don't
think it is possible to make an exhaustive list. Anyway if you need information I 'll try to help.

As far as my region 1 whishlist is concerned, it is growing bigger and bigger every day.:frowning:

Just remember that many French DVD´s have forced French subtitles which is really disturbing if you don´t speak French.

I agree with you but it depends on the different editors.
For example with Studio Canal indeed you have forced
French subtitles but with the majority American studios, you
can choose whether you want subtitles or not. If you have a doubt
about a film I mentioned below, don't hesitate to ask me and I
will check (if I possess the film of course!).

Well, the problem is that you usually can choose subtitles if you watch the the movie with the French audiotrack, but if you, for example, want to watch the movie with the English audio track, the subtitles defaults to French and they are often unremovable.

Mikel: One suggestion is that you check out French DVD sites and search for specifik titles. Some French editions have DTS tracks that don´t exist on R1 or a special packaging etc.. Check out this site:

Hi Olivier,
I don't mind forced subtitles, it's a minor nuisance. What is frustrating to me is the lack of subtitle information and the lack of English subtitles on the majority of French produced French title DVDs. It often becomes an impossible task to find this information. It is also very upsetting to realize that many of the French titles will never be accessible to non-French speakers. Since I know Russian, I find some of the titles (Jean Gabin, Lena Ventura movies) produced in Russia with Russian subtitles or Russian voice over.

Hello Irina, being French and being interested in American films,
I hadn't thought about this problem, and it's true that when I check at my French films on dvd, it happens that there are no subtitles
at all. It's a shame because actually a lot of French films should
deserve to belong to anybody's dvd collection. When you mention
classic movies with actors such as Jean Gabin, Lino Ventura you
are perfectly right. It seems that the only chance for you is to turn
towards Criterion Collection for the time being.

Hello it seems that for "Letter from an unknown woman", the
French subtitles are compulsory and you can't remove them.
The editor is Wild Side Video, which is by the way a synonym of
quality for their treatment of the films(clean master, interesting bonus and so on...), and all their dvds have the original language
audio track with French subtitles or the French audio track.
I've read the test of this dvd and it seems to be really great.

Thank you, olivier.

This filmed is owned by Universal in the USA, yes? It would be a dream-come-true if they licensed to it to Criterion.
