Mods - if this is more appropriate to After Hours, please move there.

Saturday night you have your new girlfriend (or boyfriend) coming over for movie and a pizza. She likes chick flicks and drama, you like drama and action, what new release DVD would you recommend? Keep in mind this will be bought and not rented, so it should be something you'd like to watch again.

Thanks in advance!

PS - Material that shows off the HT system a bit would be a plus :)

If you live in New England, I'd say "Fever Pitch" ;)

Baseball action/Sports stars for the men - Romantic love story for the women.

Other than that, any Disney/Pixar flick would be good. Or the Dreamworks ones (i.e Shrek)

Even though "Robots" lacked in story, the action and drama is a good match.

p.s. The 3D movies also fill your "Show off the HT" category as well.

p.s.s. Now the question we're all going to ask you is, who's the girl? ;)

As far as "chick flicks" that won't make you fall asleep go-

My first suggestion would be some films by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire). I'm sure you're familiar with his work.

"In Good Company," a romantic dramedy from the director of About A Boy is also remarkably solid. It functions as an smartchick flick, coming-of-age drama, contemporary American business drama, and an affirmation of old-school "dad" values (sort of unique in films that position fathers and sons as antgonists). I'm making it sound like a masterpiece; it definitely isn't, but it's a damn good time. It won't show off your HT system, though, unless she's a huge fan of directional dialogue and ambient fill.

There's also Amelie, which is absolutely outstanding on all fronts and has terrific repeat viewing value, but it seems like everyone's already seen it.

Whoops, I just noticed that you typed "new release" dvd. nevermind then :) I'll post anyway, in case any of this helps. There's always Batman Begins, which, aside from being alarmingly good, seems to be good at crossing just about every demographic (i.e. not appealing only to comic book people).

Regards,
Nathan

What Richard Kim said, minus "Sideways" which sucked. ;)

Watch "Old Yeller", crank out a tear and a sniffel, and you will see action.

Never fails with the ladies.

Broken Flowers(out soon)

Bill Murray for the guys, romance for the girls and drama for everyone.

I also second Batman Begins. That movie has everything.
How about the Aviator which is a drama with some romance and incredible performances.
Being female, either of those would be great to watch with my boyfriend/husband.
