I'm confused about something. Both my pre-amp and DVD player allow me to set up speakers, bass setting etc.

How do I know and more importantly control which ones are being used?

My real preference is for the DVD (regardless of analogue or digital output) to simply pass it's signal to the pre-amp and let the pre-amp decide what to do with it.

Any clarification or examples would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Keith

Your dvd player's speaker settings will apply to the 5.1 analog outputs on the player. Your receivers settings will apply to the digital coax/optical input it receives from your dvd player. In your case, it seems like you should be using the digital coax/optical output on your dvd player to your receiver.

If you're sending digital out from the player, the receiver is doing all the adjustments, this is usually preferred.

You can always experiment/test by making adjustments and observing their effects. You will find when hooked up via SPDIF that the dvd players adjustments cause no change.
