As I watched my Three Kings DVD last night, i wondered if there are more SE's out there that actually give you real insight into the making of the movie.

I know there are lots of SE's and they have great stuff on there.

    But things like the

David O. Russel Video Journal on the Three Kings DVD

are definitle what i am looking for.

when I think about great SE's that seem kinda director driven

    - Three Kings
    - Fight Club
    - Magnolia
    - CQ

    come to mind.

Please name more DVDs with extra features that feel personal.

    thanks

Seven had some good stuff. The Crow SE gives some good insight into the mind of it's creator. I liked the PBS documentary on both Gladiator and Citizen Kane, and of course the C.C. Brazil. This is the stuff I really like. One of my gripes is that most SE's are filled with crap.[IMG]

Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition is very comprehensive from pre-production all the way through post-production.

It even has articles on how the T-1000 might conceivably work in real-life through nanotechnology (if memory serves).

Go through film commentaries to get insights into the making of movies. Some commentaries are more useful than others, but a few I remember OTOMH that were good include:

*any* View Askew dvd (Kevin Smith stuff)
    Ocean's Eleven
    Blade II

I like to hear about interesing things that occured during/involved with the movie, and also to hear the principles (director, writer, actors). Just start listening to them is all anyone can tell you.

Documentary/featurette stuff is really mostly crap, IMO. The vast majority of it isn't documentary or even insightful, it's just a fifteen minute fluff piece. (As an aside, I believe last year I heard why so many extras are short 12-15min things ... something about contracts and longer pieces would trigger royalties to folks involved).

A good documentary, however, is incredible. The Star Wars documentary suff is really quite good, better than the movies are. The new BTTF discs also have some really useful docu stuff as well.

    Enjoy.

The best on IMO is The Hamster Factor on the 12 Monkeys DVD.

The documentary Good Taste Made Bad Taste included on AB's 2-disc set of Bad Taste is magnificent.

There are a lot of DVDs with good documenatries.

Here are the best I have seen:

Fellowship of the Ring: Extended Edition
Superman - The Movie (very good and intriguing stuff here!)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (possibly the best as far as one single documentary, where as most of the other movies listed have separate documentaries on the disc)
    Star Wars I & II
    Star Trek: The Director's Edition
Jaws (good, but has been cut down from the original LD)
    Tron: SE
