Anamorphic and progressive scan are two separate topics.
Anamorphic nowadays -- refers to DVD's intended for playback on a 16:9 screen. All players have a setting whereby the picture is digested to display OK on a regular 4:3 TV. Even better (not always possible or easy) reduce the vertical size (height) of the picture at the TV and you can leave the player in 16:9 mode and the picture will be sharper.
Progressive scan -- Your TV must be specifically intended to accept this via component video jacks, but the DVD player will also output regular (interlaced) video for other TV sets. The picture is smoother with less flicker and less noticeable dark gaps between scan lines.
