I have a Toshiba sd2109...if I were to upgrade to say a panny rp81 or pioneer dv47ai baring progressive scan since my tv up-converts ALL sources to either 540p or 1080i should I see a difference in picture quality

It depends on how good the line doubler is in your HD-capable monitor. Does it offer 2:3 pulldown compensation as well?

It's usually best, though, to purchase a progressive-scan DVD player with aspect ratio control.

And, yes, you might notice an improvement in picture quality with a new player. Your 2109 is getting a bit long in tooth, anyway.
