My dvd playback on my new Alienware laptop appears to be very choppy(skippy).
It is an 8x internal. I'm sure that's not enough info :)

Is there something I'm missing, a setting possibly?

Zen Butler,

You will need to be sure DMA access is turned on. If you
are using PowerDVD software, a configuration utility is included.

Otherwise, right click My Computer, hit Properties, select the Hardware tab, click Device Manager to open the DEVICE MANAGER window. Under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers", identify the Channel your DVD is connected to. Right click and hit Properties. Select Advanced Settings. Make sure "Transfer Mode" is set to "DMA if avilable".

That should fix you up.

Also make sure you have the newest drivers for your video card.

Rob, thank you so much for your response

I am using PowerDVD 5.0, because Media Player just displays my dvds as squiggly lines.

What is this configuration I should use in PowerDVD?

I'm using Power DVD 4 (not sure if 5 is the same) and the DMA configuratin utility is a separate icon called SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC. If that isn't available to you, the Device Manager method should still work. (Not sure how you get to Device Manager if you're not using Windows 2000 as I am.)
