Actually, I hadn't considered finishing the birch itself, I just wanted the structural properties. I have the damndest time keeping glue off of every surface I touch, so I had resigned myself to the veneering/laminating route.

On a test piece of Birch ply I tried pre-stain treatment then stain on one end and just stain on the other end. The pre-stain end was blotchier. Go figure.
