Is there are way to tell (other than looking for an obvious pause in playback) if a disc is dual-layered or not?

If you look at the playback side of the disc (the non-label side) you will see that most dual-layer discs are gold coloured, while most single-layer discs are silver.

Silver dual-layer discs are becoming more common, but the colour difference is still a fairly accurate way to check the disc type.

On some DVD players (such as my Sony model), you can get a display of the approximate laser position, including which layer it is on. The graphic for single-layered discs is different from that for dual-layered ones.

Most packages have RSDL printed on them.

I think RSDL stands for "Reign Supreme, Deadly Legion" and was mandated by the Satanic armies that KISS founded.:D

If you have a DVD-ROM drive, pop the disc in there and check the capacity. Greater than 4.7Gb = dual-layered.

Almost all dual-layered discs are silver these days, so checking bar code or capacity is the way to go.

You'll also notice 2 sets of numbers inside the hub, usually directly across from the bar codes. They're staggered by about 45 degrees rotation. Some companies are really good about labelling their product as dual layer, but some are not.

I have FOTR : EE and the disc are both color (sil/gold) but they're all DUAL.. so color means no nothing for now.

Put in ur dvdrom and that's the easiest way to check.
